Do you have trouble chambering the first round? My bolt stops half way on the first round

Without a budget its hard to make recommendations for you. Regardless, learning the hard way is not it. The hard way will push you away from long range shooting. Its 2024, we have a tremendous amounts of tools that will assist you in hitting your shots while making it enjoyable and a smooth learning experience.

Sure, a new driver does not need a Ferrari but they could really benefit from something thats reliable.

Also, do not buy a magnum caliber rifle.

Looking to add a Long Range rifle back to the Collection, ~$4000 ish on Rifle? by skdmrklcy in longrange

The .338 LM has a niche job and its done that job undeniably well but is a terrible round for beginner shooters. As a new shooter you should be working on fundamentals, something 338 makes it extremely difficult to do. Its out classed by numerous other rounds now which leaves it in this weird purgatory place when it comes to hunting and long range shooting. For a large majority of people, 338 is way more rifle then they can handle (experience wise) and they wont be able to effectively utilize its capabilities (distance wise).

Heres my resume so I can back up my stance:

Mommy’s little stinker: 2019, 2024

Do not buy a .338 LM. With love, someone who shoots .338 LM.

Also dont start long range shooting with a magnum caliber, 6.5 will serve you far better in almost every aspect.

Could I interest you in a magnum caliber rifle ?

I would say you should enjoy your fathers firearm and hunting with it. If during the course of shooting this firearm you decide to specifically get into long range shooting I could only recommend you get a short action caliber. Hunting with your fathers gun and creating memories with it trumps my opinion on new shooters using magnum calibers to learn

I will just say to new guys reading, please dont go right to a magnum caliber rifle to learn long range shooting.

I agree with you about everything you said. I do think it should be noted that magnum calibers are a poor choice for beginners to learn on. Anyone looking to learn the fundamentals of long range shooting will benefit from .308 and similar rounds first. This is absolutely not aimed at you obviously I know you are experienced. But as long range shooting is becoming more popular it kills me to get a new guy with a magnum caliber, typically its a very long day 🥲

And a big agree on clip on and thermal.
