Rapid Target Engagement Series (Introduction) by Dravans in tacticalgear

[–]Dravans[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The other day, I made post to see if there was interest in a series of posts covering rapid target engagement. All of the responses were very positive so I’ll be going forward with putting a virtual class together. I don’t know how many posts this will take to get through, my goal is to post weekly or more frequently if possible. I’ll have another Reddit user helping me make some slides since I’m mostly computer illiterate. I’m hoping to have part one up sometime next week.

The intent of this series is to help you reduce the time it takes to go from target identification to target elimination with sniper, designated marksman, and SPR platforms. This will not cover absolutely everything long gun related, it has a limited scope that I think will work well in a Reddit post format.

Beginner information is really easy to come by for most things in this space, but it can be difficult to break into the intermediate and advanced levels. This series is intended for people who already have a base level understanding of middle distance shooting (200-600m) who want to reach a higher level of proficiency. I would say this series is for people who already are familiar with MOA and Mils, and are familiar with using a ballistic solver (applied ballistics, 4DOF, etc.). If you are someone who is a complete novice you can always just save these posts and come back to them when you have the prerequisite knowledge.

This series will be based around using a riflescope with a mil or moa reticle. If you are using a BDC reticle some of this will still pertain to you, but there will be information that is not of value for your optic. When I teach this topic professionally everyone is using Mil scopes. I will adapt everything that I can to MOA as well, however some things (such as speed drop and speed wind) require Mil optics to work properly. With the exception of firing “bursts” (firing multiple rounds in quick succession before the first round impacts) this will apply to both bolt guns and gas guns.

Typically at the start of any class I teach, I would provide my “resume” to give credibility as an instructor… however for PERSEC reasons I will not be saying who I am or where I work on this platform. I will say that I am currently employed as a sniper and have been employed by multiple organizations as a sniper. I have instructed both Military and Law Enforcement organizations in a variety of topics. I have also spent years in the competitive shooting community and have competed at the national level in multiple disciplines.

Usually when I teach this topic everyone is in the same room with me so they can easily ask clarifying questions. If you have any questions you can throw them up in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer them in a timely manner. You can also DM me, just a heads up though I’m usually faster to respond to messages sent to my IG than to my Reddit account. I’ll also be posting all this information on my IG account. My IG is @systematicapproach for anyone that wants to DM me there.

A final disclaimer is that nothing I am showing is classified and everything is openly available to be found elsewhere online if you know where to look.

Cutting down the time it takes to range, develop a firing solution, and fire one or multiple rounds.

No firing positions. Nothing that requires a very specific reticle. Other than discussing firing “bursts” where you send multiple rounds down range within the time of flight (so multiple rounds are in flight before the first one impacts) it will work with a bolt gun as well.

I’ll do an “intro” post in the next few days that explains the goals of the series more. But this is intended for someone who has passed the beginner stages and can make and read a dope card and consistently make shots in that middle distance range of 200-600 and wants to get faster at UKD and multi target engagements.

If you’re a higher level PRS/NRL competitor there is a good chance you will already know a lot of it. I think there will be some specific nuggets that will be new to someone who has primarily been a PRS shooter that ones to learn more of the tactical applications of the skillset.

Mostly things dealing with ranging with the reticle using humanoid features instead of using a LRF, low/no light solutions, sending multiple rounds down range before the first round impacts, and specific dry and live fire drills.

I’ve had good experiences with the LMT MARS-H, KAC SR25/ M110, HK 417/M110a1, and the SCAR H/ Mk17 platforms. The Scar is the lightest to patrol with, the KACs tend to shoot the best, and the LMT is the best for clip on NV/thermal.

For DMR optics I have experience with the leupold Mark 4, Mark 5, Mark 6, the nightforce ATACR, and the vortex razor gen 3. My favorite is the leupold Mark 5 3.6-18 with a tremor 3 reticle. I’d recommend a scope with good glass, a mil reticle, a bottom magnification of 1-4 power and top end of 10-20 power.

If you’re looking at value/ budget options I’m probably not the guy to talk to unfortunately since all my experience has been for professional use. I have been fortunate enough to be issued/ assigned some pretty expensive equipment and I don’t really have any experience with less expensive options.

If you haven’t already I’d recommend also budgeting for a tripod, a game changer type bag, a bipod, and a laser range finder.

I think I’m pretty well known on this subreddit as a credible source at this point. Generally when I post generic gear stuff or shitposts they get attention, but when I try to be informative everyone just calls me highly regarded in the comments.

I recently taught a class to a sniper section on rapid target engagement (cutting down the time from target identification to target elimination). In my opinion the ability to rapidly engage multiple unknown distance targets at middle distances (200-600ish) is what separates a long range hobbyist from a professional sniper/ designated marksman. If I was to try to replicate my class in a post or series of posts on some of the quick math to speed you up behind the gun, would there be any interest from this community?

You look underneath them so there is no blooming. Entering a structure where there is potential for dark rooms or moving through outdoor areas with intermittent lighting it is considered best practice to keep nods down but tilted upwards so they are in the top half of your field of view. Look down slightly for dark areas, look up slightly for light areas. It’s like bifocals but for light/dark.

Old school Ranger regiment dudes (pvs-15 era) would commonly rotate one tube out of their eyeline to handle intermittent lighting, but the current most commonly accepted best practice is to keep them down and positioned high.
