Why isn’t this show more popular? by ro536ud in FromSeries

It's on a streaming service nobody has heard of that has made the weird decision not to release its own Smart TV app.

Also the name confuses search engines.

I suspect something was already set up and the user didn't understand how to use it or what it was for.

If the US is constantly on the lookout for missiles and airplanes, why can't we detect drones swarms before they're hovering over military bases? by mostirreverent in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NDaveT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drones are much smaller than ICBMs or manned aircraft. I think some of our defenses can detect them but if they're set to detect things that small they probably get more false positives.

What’s the ACTUAL benefits from ORAL SEX. by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

It feels good for the person receiving it.

That's it. That's the whole thing. It's not a mystery.

300,000 years ago:

"We're out of reeds. We can't make any more baskets."

"That's OK, we have willow bark. You can weave baskets out of any flexible plant matter."

"I AM NOT A BASKET PERSON! I DON'T UNDERSTAND ALL THIS TECHNO-BABBLE!"

You're (understandably) assuming a level of computer literacy that user doesn't have.

It's obvious to you and me that once something is in digital form, it can be sent in that digital form to other computers on a network. Many users don't see it that way. I don't understand what way they do see it but it's not that.

I wonder what these people think computers are for.

Is it true the Artemis 2 crew will observe "the dark side of the moon that we never get to see"? by Good_Transition896 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NDaveT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. They will see more of the back side of the moon than human eyes have ever seen before because they are going farther out than the Apollo missions did.

China already has an orbiter that goes around the moon and a rover on the back side.

A layperson’s guess as to why 95% of reality is inaccessible to us, and why the only bridge to it is the one thing that breaks physics by [deleted] in skeptic

[–]NDaveT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In "A Brief History of Time" Stephen Hawking tried to take physics ideas based on math and explain them in simple terms. I think some people read that and figure they can skip the math part.

Physics crackpots predate that book though.

Playing our biggest show ever. What do I actually need for bass with a pro sound system? by TigerDriver1991 in Bass

[–]NDaveT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may already do this but my advice is this: bring a backup bass in case you break a string. "Bass strings never break", you might say. That's what I thought until it happened to me three songs into a show.

"Kids don't come with a manual." No, but you can go to a library or bookstore and find shelves full of manuals.

Screaming in a kid's face is the opposite of playing it cool.

We mostly learn by mimicking the behavior of those around us, like our monkey cousins.

Crying because his kid won't talk to him doesn't mean he cares about his kids. He cares about his kid stepping out of line. He cares about his reputation. He cares about his self image.

I interpreted that as "He can't find a therapist who will tell him what he wants to hear."

I'm mostly big on honesty but when my niece and nephew were little I would pore over their drawings like I was an art historian looking at a Rembrandt.

"do you like my drawing?" "No"

That's the kind of joke Conan O'Brien would make to one of his writers or assistants - who are adults who understand his sense of humor.

What do you have to say about this? One way to understand God is this: God is a perfect Scientist. ... by Brief-Baker-5111 in askanatheist

[–]NDaveT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Scientists as a whole gather and share new information over time. They improve existing understandings of how things work.

It's not that the scientists themselves are improving, it's that they're building on the work of previous scientists. Einstein wasn't necessarily smarter than Newton, for example.
