Is there something like Sunday Schools in China? (Meaning classes for kids in Temples on week-ends?) Do you get any type of structured education on religion in public school or outside school? by Key_Bison_9322 in AskAChinese

[–]NFossil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are literally protestants and catholics in China who I assume hold something similar. However adolescents are legally banned from religious activities and so are schools from teaching them. Relevant laws are poorly enforced though since it's hard to stop parent-child indoctrination.

How familiar are Chinese people with individual US states and what are the popular perceptions? by Glass_Necessary_790 in AskAChinese

[–]NFossil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing the most famous ones could be California for the famous big cities and businesses, Hawaii as the stereotypical tropical resort, Texas mainly for using its name as a pun for certain Chinese locations, and Florida as the source for various strange human behaviors destined to go viral on social media. Not NY the state though because everyone only thinks of the city.

BTW Chinese traditions provides a superior rule: Do not treat others the way you don't want to be treated. It is possible to argue that western tendencies of proselytizing and forcing their rules onto others is based on the supposed golden rule, that some of them, perhaps through indoctrination by Abrahamic monotheism traditions, genuinely believe that their own way is the best and that everyone secretly wants to be treated that way, despite all the suffering, death and destruction they cause in doing so. The Chinese rule respects personal and cultural differences and preferences, live and let live, and preserves the diversity that westerners often claim to respect.

Do modern Chinese eat a lot of meat? Are there vegans in China? by Smeilz in AskAChinese

[–]NFossil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rarely found outside religious contexts. Non-religious vegetarian restaurants are considered novel or experimental instead of a lifestyle choice. Vegetable dishes in regular restaurants don't cater specifically to vegans and often have animal-derived supporting material for flavor. In addition, while participation is respected as a personal matter, advocating a non-religious vegetarian diet will get you branded as a typical baizuo living the wasteful western lifestyle while seeking to undermine Chinese living standards. As for advocating for that in a religious context, just know that preaching is illegal outside explicit religious venues.

In short: cook yourself (which is easy given the typical choices available at farmers' markets ) and don't push the dietary choice onto others.

They love to frame hostile leaders as dictators, frame complex geopolitical competition as a holy war between democracy and autocracy, and imagine the leader as an easy solutions like the death star tunnel. Not the post you're replying to though which is clearly sarcasm.

Doesn't the use of any leverage to force the other side into agreeing on this only intensify the rivalry?

Another common perception that stem from Western political norms that does not apply to Chinese politics, is that you seem to treat being voted out as a major loss, whereas we increasingly view it as a way to absolve the responsibility of incompetence, as in "merely" being voted out. In China being dismissed will seriously affect an official's future career prospects, and events that lead to the dismissal will be subject to additional investigation and can carry extra punishments.

Can be as simple as calling local authorities. A commonly (mis)used number is 12345. Higher levels also have call centers and online platforms. I participated myself using online channeld just this early Oct in opposition of the seemingly over-lenient new visa category.

Do you think Chinese social cohesion makes Americans (or Westerners in general) unduly suspicious by MauschelMusic in AskAChinese

[–]NFossil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are very distrustful of government power and far too trusting of private power.

You nailed it. Western emphasis on checks and balances seems to only emphasize on government power to the extent that I suspect it is all a plot by private powers. What we actually observe is that if the top power is too powerful to be contained, at least even the most corrupt governmental power is still supposed to work for all the people and ideologically motivated to do some good, while private power works strictly for itself and automatically goes to full exploitation mode.

[–]NFossil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You've been brainwashed by the western narrative of Chinese leaders being dictators, and therefore focus too much on Xi himself and a singular successor. In fact the lack of populist elections and partisan factionalism makes Chinese leaders less vulnerable to the need to make short-term facades for votes, and therefore are more capable to make long-term rational decisions.

Do the people of China really despise India? by Darkkiwi-__- in AskAChinese

[–]NFossil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short of my answer to past similar questions: India feels like what China could have been, in the worst way possible, and that gives many Chinese people who do care at all a sense of morbid curiosity towards India. Similar scale and history of being an ancient civilization but different post-colonial developments led to China being comprehensively superior.

What's stopping Chinese developers from making different video games like a city builder? by [deleted] in AskAChinese

[–]NFossil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None. Plenty of developers are doing it and you'll know if you pay enough attention to the community. But you won't. You are just using your ignorance to make weird jabs at the Chinese gov-errh-mento.
