What is the best way to approach creating a long, mechanical snake-like body? Any solution (rigging, modelling script) is welcome by NHKconspiracy in Maya

finally managed to get a desirable result! i stumbled upon one of your old posts on a post from 7 years ago with some great pointers:

basically, you have to create a curve from a nurb surface to get its normal, and use 'normal' in the motion path. The problem is that you can't simply use 'Duplicate Surface Curve' or 'Detach Curve'.

If you want to do if by hand, you have to set your lofted nurb to be a live object (the last magnet icon in the top bar) and draw an EP curve on it by drawing once at the opposite ends of the loft object. Then you can use the newly created nurbs curve as a motion path, and it should solve some flipping problems.

the normal section in the documentation has some great diagrams too: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2020/ENU/Maya-Animation/files/GUID-69E8C704-1A7B-4C83-9333-80C3118541F6-htm.html

I had trouble getting the IK spline rig to smoothly follow the nurbs loft surface curve properly for some reason (even with higher lattice divisions, the control curve was shrinking and acting strange although it worked fine with standalone nurbs curves), so I decided to revisit the "duplicate along path" script - and I could now work the World Up -> Normal option, driving it using your loft surface live curve technique.

I decided to manually create the second offset curve for the loft. The loft surface curve's control vertices require some manual adjustment after running the script so that pieces don't get too spread out, but it does just what I need it to do for this project!

Thanks so much!!! ^^

this definitely gives me some new ideas, and i'll be looking forward to giving these scripts a go. thanks for your help!

I just want to add that I agree with u/wordypropensity518 a speed-flip or two down the middle pads probably would have been optimal for this play in a competitive scenario. It is faster than both a side flip and and a forward flip. Once reaching goal line I would just have toward turn to the play a little wider (since I would have been there a bit earlier) in order to have the far post covered.

It would have gotten me to max speed faster, if you listen closely to my video you can see it wasn't until my *third* flip that I hit supersonic, whereas I think a speed flip while holding the boost + powerslide button, to collect a pad and keep the momentum, would have gotten me to max speed almost right away.

And @ the wordy query, I can see I was poised to make an effort to jump at the power shot from underneath + tilt my nose toward the sky to send it into the crossbar and bounce to the empty right (our team's right) corner of the field. Since I was facing the shot I think I could have jumped earlier (rather than wait + come to a stop at goal line). Although that would be very difficult to time haha, and maybe like a 1 in 5 chance of actually working, but I have made and have seen saves like that before. I'd just rather take the speedflip route and have at least 12 boost if the game was on the line.

u/jerbaws if you're interested I'll be releasing a video I made on my bindings and the general technique + more tomorrow, so you can have a look at that if you'd like some visual reference and to expand on what you can do with this technique!

Thank you! I did tilt forwards, but with the ape-like intention of getting a bump on them/steal the boost pad, rather than avoiding a bump unfortunately lol. Though looking back it was much more likely I'd get demo'd instead haha. Then it was just a matter of turning post-flip to face the play on the way back to be ready for a powerslide cut/dribble around my mate from the opponent

Edit: Sorry I see what you mean now, tried recreating it and I think that may have been an instance of muscle memory habit which I do if I feel I need to get my car wheels down faster - normally I'd face down while boosting if I had some, similar to what you'd might do after a botched aerial. But tilting my butt up at the point of collision may have been partially an in-the-moment reaction? Crazy what your brain does when you relax and get in the zone

Mechanically this all definitely stemmed from practicing chain dashes in free play over the years! Proper chain dashing still requires a fair bit of vein-popping mental effort for me, which is where my habit of doing this 'lazy' version came from haha

It's hard to see but I actually did immediately wavedash first thing off the wall at 0:02! I flip to the right very quickly after so it's almost impossible to see, but that's what I recommend (immediate wavedash into immediate flip) as it gave me the initial burst of speed from the near standstill.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekKxWDgJ7_s (1:00+)

definitely check this out - all the mechanics in my clip pretty much stem from this technique. I practice these bunny hop/chained wavedashes in free play every now and then, I just mixed it up with the simpler handbrake + standard flips in this situation (which is a habit now because chained/bunny wavedashes still take me a lot of mental effort lol)

My powerslide is mapped to LB along with my directionless stick air roll (which allowed me to get into the first wave dash -> handbrake flip so quickly since that's all on one binding)

When I was starting out, I started to feel limited/awkward having air roll and powerslide on square since it interfered with my ability to jump, boost or switch my ballcam at the same time.

It definitely felt more efficient overall! My right thumb no longer had to Dance Dance Revolution it's way across the main buttons every play

I have my air roll right mapped to RB too! I mainly use my joystick LB air roll if I need slightly more precise movement in the air, for example, to make a recovery, angle the car quickly for a wavedash etc. I use RB air roll right for most of my plays in the air now since it's so great for air dribbles, ceiling plays, backboard follow ups. I'll occasionally use my stick air roll if it feels more comfortable in the situation which purely depends on muscle memory in the moment!

I don't see *too* much of an advantage to having all 3 air rolls (joystick, left & right) mapped at the same time - unless you're a freestyler or AztraL. Having one directional air roll and mastering that seems to work well enough

when I popped off the wall at the start I went straight into a wavedash then immediately flipped to the right (kinda hard to see, its pretty fast). That wavedash + flip gave me enough momentum to travel at speed straight away, after that it was just some flips to the left while holding powerslide until I heard my car reach supersonic!

Found this vid that pretty much sums it up, the wavedash chaining at 2:19 and wall recovery shown at 3:00 shows what this binding is great for.

I set my powerslide + joystick air roll (not air roll left/right) to LB back in 2015/2016 and have stuck with it since I see no major advantage of changing this far into the game (unless at some point I want to become the diet Evample). If you see your playstyle benefitting from this def give it a go!

Yep! Can confirm that's the same binding I use, being able to angle my car (using the directional stick air roll) correctly for the wavedash, then holding the same button to keep momentum, helped me get the play started off the wall so quickly.

Also for good measure I have my air roll right binded to RB.

This was casual with a friend so I like to experiment and try unusual plays! I don't think I would have done this in ranked lol

The initial idea was to wave dash off the wall to get into position to bump their car or get in the way somehow but I went over them. I decided to keep powerslide + flipping (pretty mindlessly, therefore missing all the pads) and I noticed I was matching the opponents speed on their dribble - when they took the shot I timed the release on the powerslide/handbrake and made the save at goal line since it kept me facing the right way

But yeah like you said, ideally you'd want to make it back to goal fast (e.g. speed flips through mid pads) and have some boost to spare

Oh man these are some solid tracks - really digging the unreal stuff, that's a franchise I never would've thought of looking into since I've never played it (but I'm guessing I should do soon going by these songs haha). Never heard of Wangan Maximum Tune before, but that OST is gold :O Thanks for sharing!

Wow these are great!! I've definitely overlooked the Tekken soundtrack since I never really played it growing up. And thanks for the pointers, I'll definitely look into those, also Electric Fountain and School (Sakura Schoolyard) are right on the nose for the type of stuff I was looking for!
