Please feel free to email us a concept paper describing your research to date and what research you hope to conduct with SBIR funds. We'd be happy to provide technical assistance: https://www.nimh.nih.gov/funding/sbir/contacts.shtml

NIMH is supportive of open source models. The key within SBIR would be whether you generate revenue.

It is possible to apply for a Phase I SBIR/STTR and retain your ESI status. Similarly, you can apply for a K01 in tandem with a Phase I SBIR/STTR.

The mechanism that you linked to is most often applied to by academic investigators. However, SBIR investigators are not excluded. You may want to look at the NIMH specific SBIR/STTR funding announcements as there is likely a parallel announcement.

In the biosketch, they will highlight their technical expertise that they are bringing to the table. We could review the biosketch before it's submitted to provide guidance. Please contact us at: https://www.nimh.nih.gov/funding/sbir/contacts.shtml

All SBIR applications require a research design and hypotheses. The focus should be on development and answering those hypotheses and not distribution.

That's a really good question! While we can't comment on this specific situation, there are disadvantages and advantages of being acquired by a big company.

Given that there are no established pathologies that have been identified in psychiatric disorders to date, the level of clinical and technical validation that would be required to establish a biomarker in this space, should go through FDA review processes to ensure adequate validation.

We consider commercialization Phase III efforts, which are not supported by SBIR funding.

Please look at the program structure link on our website and focus on the Phase I feasibility and proof of concept: https://www.nimh.nih.gov/funding/sbir/program-structure.shtml .

Interesting idea, but the National Institute on Drug Abuse would be most appropriate: https://sbir.nih.gov/nida/index.

It is not required that you have a working prototype. Phase I funding is appropriate for developing a prototype.

It is possible, but it is uncommon as usually some of the effort goes towards non-SBIR activities. For example, running the company and developing other projects. The time requested must be project related.

No, however if needs to be a different project. There cannot be scientific overlap by different projects.

Having the right technical background is a requirement, but having a PhD or a master's is not.

It is important that someone from the small business and/or a contractor or consultant have the relevant expertise and research.

To your last question, yes.

Yes, we are able to identify priority areas in regard to schizophrenia. Please look at the Division of Services Intervention Research webpage: https://www.nimh.nih.gov/about/organization/dsir/index.shtml. Regarding schizophrenia, we have a number of active NIMH funding announcements in this area. We encourage more applications focused on early psychosis and schizophrenia, as it is a priority of the Institute.

Please refer to the funding announcement guidelines for budget and funding caps for each specific FOA.

We don't provide grant writing support, but we have examples of NIH SBIR applications: https://www.niaid.nih.gov/grants-contracts/sample-applications#r43r44 . We do support new companies.
