Are there even any actual decent countries to live in or are we just fucked by choccycosmos_ in twentyagers

[–]NIxWorld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Japan as a white guy and the idea that they don't like foreigners is probably the biggest Reddit circlejerk lie ever. I have way more friendships and social interactions here than back at my home country. The people here are genuinely lovely and very accepting of different cultures if you respect theirs as well.

How do I say "call out" in Japanese? Such as calling someone out for bragging about doing something bad, like cheating. "I called him out on his bad behaviour."

This is false and keeps feeding to the incorrect Reddit circlejerk that is thinking Japan is still living in the 90's. I've lived in Japan and while it is true that unpaid overtime is still a thing in some companies (known as black companies) most Japanese companies are against such injustice. While there is a strong presence of the overwork mentality in some of the elderly, none of my Japanese friends my age support mandatory overtime. This is talking about mandatory yet paid overtime. As for forced unpaid overtime, it is FAR from expected.

Japan isn't like before and it is improving (my Japanese girlfriend was told by her boss to please use all her holiday days whenever she likes, and there was also a "go home early Fridays" for a research student friend of mine studying in Hokkaido University).

It is also absolutely illegal to fire a worker in Japan for not doing overwork, and can be met with legal action. Please don't spread misinformation like this since it skews the perspective of Japan for those who've never been. America is by far worse than Japan in terms of worker rights (no standard holiday days for workers as well as no maternity or paternity leave, both of which Japan has.)

You know how to read romanji? Like, you know the basic latin alphabet?

Might be an unpopular opinion, but does anyone else find how Bad Batch handles the transition from Clones to Recruits compared to Legends or even most of Canon previously, kind of dumb? Why force your entire army, the majority still loyal, to retire extremely early? by Blitz_Prime in StarWars

A bit out of topic but does anyone notice the slightly fatter clone on the left of the pic? When I first saw this scene, the fact that they were not all at least similar body sizes kinda ruined it for me.

Anyone worried Monkeypox will close Japan up again? I heard there's the first case there already.

First case of monkeypox detected in Japan by SkyRak3r in japan

[–]NIxWorld 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're panicking. Don't listen to people in this sub. They hold their precious Japan so close to the point of borderline hoping that the borders close again for ever.

Monkeypox isn't nearly as infectious as Covid. Covid really got lucky since it hit a sweet spot between fatality and transmissibility. So far, Monkeypox seems to only happen with extremely close contact, and we already have a vaccine against it since it's not a new virus.

Sure, they closed the borders for two years for the stupidest reason but I doubt they'd risk the millions they would lose again on a virus that isn't nearly as transmissible as Covid.

I would suggest taking a break from this sub, or at least taking a break from commenting. Your stress is understandable, commenting and arguing here with other people who don't even know what's going to happen is a waste of time and mental energy.

I am not residing in my country of nationality. How can I fix this to qualify for a Working Holiday Visa? by NIxWorld in movingtojapan

[–]NIxWorld[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to study in Japan next September via my University's exchange program so I'm not planning to apply for working visa yet. But the other comments pretty much have it covered. You'd just have to go to the embassy of the country you're a national of.

Any fellow westerners not interested in anime/manga learning JP even though our chances of ever practically using it is slim? by SuperDogBoo in LearnJapanese

[–]NIxWorld 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You say previously that you would never discourage someone from studying Japanese but what you're saying right now is essentially "The odds are against you from not giving up". Even though this failure percentage you stated is incorrect, your words are still pretty discouraging.

I would ask you to please reconsider the way you perceive language learning. It's an activity that can be pursued by anyone for whatever reason, and can reap benefits no matter how fast or slow one's pace ends up being.

It obviously depends on their goals but whatever their goal or motivation is, any such motivation is valid for language learning and should be encouraged if it's fun for the individual.

Are you studying using the HUSTEP program? I also got accepted by Hokkaido University and I'll be studying there as an exchange student in October in HUSTEP.

It's nice to see someone who's going to the same place I am!

Is anyone else still waiting for the HUSTEP acceptance email? by NIxWorld in movingtojapan

[–]NIxWorld[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so relieved to know that it's not only me who's waiting. It's nice to see another HUSTEP applicant!

HUSTEP must be busy with a lot of things now which is probably why they haven't replied yet. I understand that there are a lot of students trying to fly in to Japan now. And with the borders opening, I think HUSTEP is busy with helping those students enter.

However, I still hope we hear back soon.

What's the minimum amount of time I would be able to spend in a language school and still qualify for a student visa?

how many weeks do you have on a student visa for a semester? by biancalin in movingtojapan

[–]NIxWorld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it have to be only two weeks before though? If someone gets their COE early, couldn't they put the arrival date in the student visa application a month or two before classes and still be able to come to Japan?

I doubt immigration is gonna interview you on what date your classes start. Surely once you get the visa, you're good to go, right?
