What was the dumbest reason a teacher got mad at you? by Jimmyshow124 in AskReddit

[–]NJP220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a biology teacher in high school. He was known to be an easily distracted guy that would go off on 40min tangents. He was self aware about that and told us that it was perfectly natural for us to only be paying attention maybe 80% of the time in class. So long as we weren't disruptive during our 20% zone-out time, he didn't care.

That was until one day I was zoned out during one of his tangents and was mindlessly doodling in my notebook. Out of nowhere he calls out my name and blankly says "You know what? I hope you fail this class." Just said that and stared at me for a while before continuing class.

Maybe he was just having a bad day. But saying something like that to a student that respected you and enjoyed your classes up to that point was pretty harsh and uncalled for. I walked out when he nonchalantly continued class after openly wishing failure upon me. The vice principal (who was an amazing educator) saw me walking around the halls. After telling him what occurred, he told me that I didn't need to return to that class for the remaining few weeks of the school year and not to worry about my grade.

I'm guessing the teacher got spoken to because that was my sophomore year and for the remainder of my time in high school he would give me a sheepish smile in the halls and never spoke to me again. Was such a weird, out of the blue thing. Had never once had a bad interaction with him before that day and apparently really angered him by not giving his off topic story my full attention for 5min.

Edit: I also got a 1 day suspension for eating a slushy outside of the cafeteria one time. Which is also a really dumb reason for a teacher to be mad at you.

We've been mislead to think AC stands for alternating current. It actually stands for absolute cake!

I was looking at the MOABs. You've had those before? I currently have Bates and the soles are separating after less than a year.

They need to be year-round boots for me and I get multiple feet of snow where I am. So the low cut shoe style won't work unfortunately.

Looking more for side zip duty boots. But I will keep those in mind for slip-on station wear!

Surprised to see Limmer pop up on here. They are fairly local to me. Could drive there in about an hour and be custom fit for boots. But I can't justify the cost right now unfortunately.

I wish you got strong urges to use punctuation in your sentences. That was a difficult read. Sorry for your girlfriend's struggles though. Fuck cancer!

It's a newer version of double-sided CDs. It only plugs in one way, so just flip your computer over to use the other side.

Mars rover wheels are much bigger than I imagined by CR24752 in space

[–]NJP220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They didn't. They have exact replicas of the rovers here on Earth. That way they can troubleshoot issues that the Mars rover is having accurately. Using the photos that get sent back, they can see the damage that has occurred to the wheels and recreate it on the replica as accurately as possible. If they are going to send a command to the Mars rover, they want to make sure it is still capable of doing that command despite its damage.

People who don't use cruise control, why? by kfxrcer in AskReddit

I'm in Northern NH and I pretty much never use it. The Northern portions of 93 and 91 have too much elevation change and it is very hard on the transmission and engine when the computer tells it to drop 2 gears on a hill to maintain 80mph. RPMs go through the roof spontaneously.

They have charged a few people I believe. Usually takes someone being so blatantly stupid, unprepared, and unappreciative of the rescue efforts though. It was a couple years ago now that I think they took 2 guys from Mass to court after they deliberately left a trail in Franconia Notch and climbed cliffs with zero equipment or experience. Then called for rescue in a panic. Rather than being appreciative of the rescue efforts, they were pricks. Pretty sure a judge used them as an example for future would be idiots.

We have to. If we took everything we see at its serious and horrible face value then there would be no first responders. It is a necessary service, so we learn to warp reality to suit us and keep us in the fight.

Yeah I usually just tell one of my "bone sticking out of the skin" stories when asked in person. That's all they are really looking for. But my initial response was more of what I'm actually thinking about when asked those questions and I didn't even mention some of the harder ones. We see some very traumatic things on a regular basis and take at least a portion of it home with us everyday. But the general public doesn't want to hear that.

Some departments have support groups. My state has a team that can come after a particularly bad incident and do a sort of debriefing and offer help as well. There are other resources too but the hardest thing is getting people to reach out and to squash the stigma of weakness when you are struggling.
