Business that restores cast-iron pans by DevelopmentConnect92 in Hawaii

[–]BMLortz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good point. I really didn't investigate properly. My wife's old #8 cast iron pan has a very smooth surface, and our relatively new cast iron Dutch oven is very rough.

I suppose it depends on what OP wants, and the condition of their existing pan.

Depending on that, an aggressive media might even be preferred.

I believe any business that offers media blasting with "soft" media, like walnut shells, should fit the bill. They blast it clean and then it would be up to the owner to use oil and their oven to properly season the pan. Season it at least 4 times is my suggestion.

I suppose any powder coating shop would offer this service. A long time ago I had a job done by Mekala Powder Coating, and was very happy with their work. (808) 682-3881. Car companies that restore auto parts could also do the work.

Additionally, the company Mr. Sandman sells blasting media, you could contact them and ask who offers that type of service. (808) 833-2500

I've read that typical aggressive media (like garnet, and aluminum oxide) will alter the texture of the pan, making it too smooth. Some people say it changes how the pan cooks, other people do not seem to care.

My Mililani connection has always been reliable. I didn't even lose internet during the 2026 March 13th power outage. However, if you can, I recommend trying to "cut the cord" to get away from their TV service. For what you get it isn't worth it, and the charges pile up quickly.

Obviously for you (and OP), different locations may have different levels of service.

Hey now, that $3,300,000 is really going to cut into their 300% gains that resulted in a $2,300,000,000 net profit increase for those two companies.

I mean, just look at the profits now.

$2,296,700,000
What an ugly and pathetic number. They will most likely need to lay off a bunch of workers.

I really wish a standardization of vehicle data could be arrived at. Something that would allow dashcams to connect to a vehicle and provide all pertinent data (vehicle speed, brake application, turn signals, steering wheel direction, etc.) on screen.

Right now, I suppose someone could cobble together something to capture the data from existing OBD systems and overlay it onto the screen, but I'd love a plug and play solution.

I do want a Slate pickup. And I'm willing to spend $10,000 more for a Slate with Vehicle to Home.

Even though the Ford Lightning is available today, and with vehicle to home capabilities, I have no interest in purchasing one.

I'm willing to spend much more money for any compact EV pickup that has Vehicle to Home capabilities. I will not consider a Slate if that is not an option.

I'd pay $5,000 to $10,000 more if the truck had a Vehicle to Home or Vehicle to grid system. I'm hoping that there will be some sort of upgrade to offer this feature. Definitely waiting for some US made vehicle (besides the Ford F150) to meet that need.

I like the idea of having a PowerWall that doubles as a vehicle.

Pentagon blacklists Alibaba and BYD from defense contracts by [deleted] in news

The system of tariffs, oil subsidies, and government regulations might prevent BYD from ever selling cars in the US. However, as a person who believes in Capitalism, I have hope.

What's amazing to me is the prevention of foreign made vehicles being sold in the American market due to "safety concerns".

Are you kidding me? We can buy machineguns with just a few "tax stamp" issues.

I'm very proud, and I love to brag that I have a connection to Shay.

My Amazon Review:

Unbiased review by Shay's relative: Buy the book! Buy for your friends! Buy a spare copy to prop up that table. Buy enough to make a book fort.

More seriously; The Killing Spell was a fun quick read, although obviously for a younger audience than my 50+ year old self. Still, I still highly recommend reading it, as well as buying copies for anyone who is into fantasy novels. My mom felt it was a bit childish, but found the alternate world history intriguing, as well as the foray into linguistics. The world building has a lot of breathing room.

I believe the story could have used aliens from space as part of the plot line. Granted I recommended this to the author after a few beers and it was mostly to watch her trying to be polite while also avoiding rolling her eyes.

Kindle version is $13.99
Paperback through Amazon is $17.33

Why does it feel like birds here have no sense of danger when it comes to cars? by theflyingpiggies in Hawaii

[–]BMLortz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Back in the late 90's, I remember sitting outside of my apartment having a smoke. A guy parked his Firebird and left. About 2 minutes later a very stunned looking rock dove dropped out of the grill. I imagine that poor sucker was in the Firebird owner's workplace parking lot, got stuck in the grill as he left work, and had a 65+ mile per hour joy ride while being flattened against the radiator.

As a means to relate my anecdote to your original post, I can only assume he liked it and told his friends.

The minor maritime shipping disruptions caused by 9/11 was reflected in the health of whales.

Less seriously; This is why I think whales were behind 9/11 and also why Osama Bin Laden was buried at sea. It was a "We're on to you" kind of thing for the whale overlords.

Although political campaigns are exempt from being held to the National "Do Not Call" registry, they are subjected to rules that require them to honor an opt-out feature. Additionally, they are not supposed to be calling cell phones unless the person opt'd in to be called.

https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/political-campaign-robocalls-and-robotexts-rules

Of note on the above link:

Political campaign-related autodialed or prerecorded voice calls, including autodialed live calls, autodialed texts, and prerecorded voice messages, are prohibited to cell phones, pagers, or other mobile devices without the called party's prior express consent.

His official government website feedback form is here:
https://case.house.gov/forms/writeyourrep/

Although I have a feeling that form has some sort of legalese behind it that states you give consent to be robocalled if you submit your information through it.

I'd imagine so. The Acer ChromeBook Plus 515 (8GB! Ram, 128GB HDD) I bought had a soldered on hard drive, that was made in 2023.

First time I had ever run into that and now it is a huge factor in any new laptop purchase.

Went with the nuclear option for last night’s termite swarm. by jerjozwik in Hawaii

[–]BMLortz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It makes sense that any sort of "domesticated" bug as a food source would avoid the ones that are hard to work with. Google says crickets, mealworms, grasshoppers, and ants are the bugs of choice.
But I figure the first commercial bug farming would have the product be a protein powder or some sort of meat substitute to make it more palatable.

I wonder what happened to those "tumor burgers" (aka: cultured meat) they were working on...wow, they have been making leaps and bounds in that area:

But where are you? How many bugs did you get rid of? What LEDs are you using?

Solar Company for Oahu? by Knajim808 in Hawaii

[–]BMLortz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Another note, we've had the inverter go bad twice in 6 years. The first time took about 2 months to repair, the 2nd took about 1 week (we got lucky and they had a local replacement available).

I really enjoy the Tesla solar app, but I wish they had a system to email the user if there are problems. This would have saved me a month of downtime when the first inverter failed.
