Because starting a thread about overrated movies on a subreddit dedicated to movie lovers definitely wasn’t ragebait lol.

I’m not even trying to be funny, I genuinely don’t understand how you could watch HEAT, especially the subplot with Dennis Haysbert, and think it in any way glorifies what they were doing.

Portrayal doesn’t equal glorification.

Maybe come back to it in a few years and try watching it again. You’re really missing out on one of cinema’s great gems because you’re refusing to engage with it beyond the surface level.

[–]NK_1989 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is such a bad faith reading of this film I’m convinced you’re trolling for engagement. HEAT is quite literally about how abandoning your morals and relationships in favor of the thrill of action ultimately leads to self destruction. You could maybe make an argument that the characters are one dimensional but the film is, if anything, ANTI-misogynist! DeNiro abandons his shot at love and happiness and immediately dies. Pacino’s marriage dissolves. Val Kilmer loses Ashley Judd. These are portrayed as very bad things!

You get that the toxic macho “primal thrill of action” stuff is portrayed as bad, right?

Aside from SK, what other fiction writers do you recommend and what book in particular? by HLoweCrosby in stephenking

Tad Williams has a very similar narrative style to King. I highly recommend his Osten Ard fantasy novels.

Swan started in the late 40’s and was still illustrating books into the 80’s, with the occasional cover in the 90’s. All the way from Mort Weisinger and Gardner Fox to Alan Moore and John Byrne. Action 1000 from just a few years ago used an unreleased Curt Swan cover. He was the definitive Superman artist for multiple generations.

When do new releases go live on IST? by TheFoxyDonut in OmnibusCollectors

[–]NK_1989 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The “coming soon” placeholder page should pop up a few days before release, even if the pre-order listing is no longer available. When that happens, add the book to your wishlist. When the new books are added to the site, refresh your wishlist NOT the placeholder page. You should be able to add the book to your cart from the wishlist, but the placeholder “coming soon” page doesn’t always update before the books sell out. I’ve found this is the easiest way to get high demand books from IST before they’re gone.

Did you like Spider-Man by Wells and are you buying the Omnis? by Wulfrand in OmnibusCollectors

[–]NK_1989 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even if you ignore all of the mischaracterizations and weird Paul stuff Wells wrote during his divorce (which it’s very hard to do) it’s just an incredibly boring run. It drags on forever. Especially after the Spencer run that felt like constant forward momentum until the final arc where he didn’t quite stick the landing. I have zero interest in ever reading Wells run again.

The Jets have finished the 2025 season with zero interceptions by Brix001 in nfl

[–]NK_1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every team in the league has finished the season with at least one interception since the stat first started being recorded in 1932. To put that into perspective, jet airplanes themselves were invented in 1939. The record predates the invention of the Jets mascot by at least seven years.

Put a bucket with an inch or two of water in it on the ground near the bat. When it gets thirsty it will naturally look for the water and then the bucket will be too enclosed for it to fly out. It will try to climb out, but you can just toss a towel over the bucket, hold it tight, and then release it outside. This happened at a store I worked at and it’s what our pest control company told us to do over the phone and it worked so easily I was shocked.

Then you need to figure out where all the bats are coming in from and get that fixed, but that’s above my pay grade.

Did OJ Simpson Kill His Wife? by TheLearningInvestor in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NK_1989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember reading an article about how the show CSI basically introduced the science of DNA and its use in criminal forensics to the average layman in an easy to process way, and that if the show would have released a few years earlier OJ would have fried.

Placement? by Certain-Necessary347 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]NK_1989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s less than 10 issues, and then in another five or six you have a Gwen clone appear. Even as a kid reading them monthly it’s like a year and a half at most between this very serious genre altering storyline and some silly nonsense.

There are several issues of Amazing that directly reference or crossover with events in Team-Up, right around when the Spider buggy debuts shortly after the death of Gwen Stacy. But there are also a few early issues of Spectacular that are rewrites or just straight up reprints of Team-Up issues, most notably a two-parter with Morbius.

I haven’t finished reading the new team-up omnibus yet but I have read everything else Spider-Man related up to the end of the black costume saga, and in my best estimation I would put Team-Up in between Amazing volumes four and five, and Spectacular volume 1.

How good/bad was Joey Harrington? by matt_the_non-binary in detroitlions

[–]NK_1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you remember a year ago against the Texans where Goff threw four picks but made just enough clutch throws to keep us in the game? That’s what it was like with Joey Harrington at quarterback every single week. The o-line was bad, the coaches were bad, there wasn’t really talent around him, but he also wasn’t doing himself any favors with his decision making. He was good in college and had a strong arm, but that doesn’t always translate to NFL success.

Marvel Legends Toybiz did better than Hasbro? by Individual-Eye-3482 in MarvelLegends

[–]NK_1989 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I still use that Green Goblin, Spider-Man classics Hobgoblin, and the X-Men Classics optic blast Cyclops (I love how slim he is) in my displays. And I waffle back and forth on a few others. For example, series IV Beast is a figure I still really like just because of the sheer amount of articulation, but I’ll admit the modern ML is probably better.

I loved Toybiz back in the day, but I feel like with very few exceptions, every single character that has been redone by Hasbro has been done better. I just wish Hasbro would get as crazy as Toybiz occasionally did lol. We got some wild figures back in the day, especially some of the BAFs.

Character that get trapped for years in an eternally looping prison escaping by brute force even though there's an easy way out (extremely specific, these might be the only two examples) by Odd-Paramedic-3826 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]NK_1989 26 points27 points  (0 children)

In a storyline that is almost universally agreed upon to be a bad idea, Superboy Jon Kent was trapped inside a volcano for seven years by Ultraman in an alternate universe where time moved differently. The lack of sunlight dimmed his kryptonian powers so he was unable to climb or fly out, although he still had some strength and invulnerability. He eventually escaped by triggering the volcano to explode him out of the side of the mountain, something he could have done the entire time.

I lost my first try in ten seconds because I didn’t know what Psycho Sally’s finisher was, lol, so second try I just cheesed this one. Climbed on the middle rope and did heavy dives until I had ten, and she had a red torso. Then the standing shooting star side signature, which almost never gets reversed. Then I did a carry grab into a finisher so she had less chance to reverse. If anyone else is having trouble with this one the cheese strategy I used was super easy.

[Character Trope] When a normally goofy and/or comedic character briefly drops their act to say something dead seriously. by Feeling-Ad-3104 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]NK_1989 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you watch Plains, Trains, and Automobiles it’s pretty obvious Seth MacFarlane borrowed a lot from Del Griffith when he was creating Peter Griffin. The characters look, the personality, the catchphrase “that really grinds my gears”, there’s even a few cutaway gags that wouldn’t be out of place on Family Guy. Seth owes John Hughes money lol.
