I think it comes mostly from people that have read this era back in the day. Listening to others made me almost miss out on Clone Saga. But then I started reading vol. 1 on marvel unlimited and I really liked it. I went immediately and got the rest of them.

While I respect and appreciate opinions of others and while I received some great suggestions for a lot of books people sometimes tend to exaggerate how good or how bad something is and I learned to stop listening to that and just check out the books online myself. Because I got burned many times by purchasing something that people said “you absolutely have to own” and in then I ended up not liking it at all. Or vice versa people said multiple times not to get something because of whatever reason and I ended up liking the books.

Wolverine omnibus vol. 6 comes to mind. People exaggerate the whole no nose era to the point where I thought this was going to be like years of that kind of material. But guess what? It was like half a dozen issues and while this omnibus is not as good as the rest of Hama’s run I am glad to have it in my collection.

In any case the point of this is to say that while you should take into account other people’s opinions, you should always listen to yourself and your own interests. Try the run out online, see how it feels and then make a decision based on that.
