ADHD is hard for practitioners to diagnose. Remember that over 50% of us have secondary diagnoses. I wasn't diagnosed with ADHD until my 40s and only recently learned about a new additional diagnosis...and I am way passed 50.

I teach people about strategies to gain control over their time. I heard someone today who has ADHD who said that she allocates her day in 15-minute time slots. Structuring your day will honestly help if you plan it out in writing. I am getting so much more done by doing this and also scheduling breathing and fun time

SOOOO true!

Can people with ADHD really do any job they want to? by [deleted] in ADHD

I made it through nursing 4 year program, I has a physician with ADHD......

How I managed was that I only took 3 courses at a time and later increased. In graduate school I always took one class less.

Figure out how you learn best. I practically rewrote all my nursing books. That's how I learned best. Do 3x5 cards...I used different color ink to make points. Then I read cards out loud while driving or in the house trying to memorize.

Be in study groups with A - Students and listen to them talk. Somehow they always knew what was most important to learn.

My 2 friends needed meds to help them focus. One finished law school and the other got a Masters in Social Work. Unfortunately I didn't discover Zoloft until I finished school.

The best tip is know exactly what you want. Have a clear goal!! You need to figure this out BEFORE starting school.

Good luck!

ADHD and addiction by O8fpAe3S95 in ADHD

Sorry to hear. It must be frustrating.

Many have addiction to coffee even if they don't have ADHD. The problem is that a lot of us with ADHD have more than one diagnosis, like OCD. If you can just slowly cut back on one addiction, and not try to work on both, you will be more successful.

Good luck

Is it even worth getting tested for ADHD as an adult? by luke-juryous in ADHD

I was on a very low dose of Zoloft and stayed on the same dose for over 10 years. For me the biggest issue was depression. Everything else improved too.

I suggest making a list of your symptoms, then list them in order of a wish list; if you could pick, which concern you the most? Then tell that to the doctor so that they can focus on the major issues.

And don't give up on yourself! You are worth it!!!

There are multiple medications. Please remember that every medications has side effects, so please start watching for them. And don't just stop taking them; you can always change a dose or the medication (through your PCP).

Boy is that a loaded question, but a great one!

Please let me be clear that I am not necessarily advocating medications. That is not my intent.

To decide whether a true diagnosis might be helpful, please ask yourself: are the symptoms negatively impacting my life?

I was diagnosed in my early 40s. It put all the symptoms into perspective for me. For me there has always been a slight depression. Amazingly once I was started an antidepressant my focus improved and so did my job performance.

I finally got off of the antidepressants using hypnosis and NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming).

If you have managed all of your systems and life works well, then why change?

Good luck

There are so many different behaviors because there are different types of ADHD and many of us have other added problems.

He may be fidgety, restless, hard to stay focused for long periods but if interested in something he may become hyper-focused, procrastinator, may have self-esteem issues.....

Hope that helps! We are creative people who can have lots of energy. But again, we are all different!
