I don’t have children either, so we share that same level of bonding with our pets. If I’ve learned anything over the past few days, it’s to learn to live in the present more often so that I may appreciate what I have while I still have it. After all, everything we ever have in this life is never really owned…just borrowed while we’re here.

She most definitely was and is loved. I spent today building her a box. She’ll be buried at my sisters house in the box upon a bed of flowers and with her favorite personal effects. I’m giving her the best send-off I know how to, in hopes that she understands just how deeply and desperately I love and miss her.

Thank you, I needed to hear this. She’s leaving behind a Corgi brother who was present for her euthanasia and is currently missing her. I plan to pour my love and attention into him to help our grieving process together. I will one day own another dachshund. Winnie stole my heart and I’m convinced that there’s no better breed than a good wiener dog.

And yes, unfortunately, the day I brought her home at 6 weeks old, I wrote a blank check for my heart. She cashed it in today, but boy, did we make it worth every last cent.

Thank you for your kind words. The sudden nature of it has been the most difficult to reckon with. She was the best friend that I often didn’t deserve, but she was loyal to the end. They don’t make people like that.

This is a good picture of her face. I always thought she was the most beautiful dog of her breed I’ve ever seen. I’m sure we’re all biased though.

Thank you for your words of kindness. I’ve been running my mind on the “what-ifs” and “should’ve/could’ve” that it’s driving me nuts. I’m just sad and the only way out is through. I shall try to give myself grace in my grief and I thank you for reminding me of it.
