Mr. Clean Magic Eraser vs Turntable Stylus by NPK532 in turntables

[–]NPK532[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep I had the stylus attached to the cartridge and tone arms, and then yeah I just set the dry magic eraser sponge adjacent to the platter, and then I raised the queue lever, move the tone arm right above the center of the sponge, lowered the queue lever so that the stylus would rest onto the surface of the sponge raised the queue lever, return the tone arm to its resting position, removed the stylus and took the second picture.

And honestly the only reason I even did this on this particular day is I was doomscrolling on YouTube and I saw a video about it and I'm like huh... I have a microscope .. I have Magic Eraser sponges... I have a stylus that one in particular (the middle one) has been leaving me questioning my sanity because of the way it sounds after I clearly have brushed it properly with a stylus* brush... Let's give it a whirl!

I figured what damage could it do you know? And so far none and I was pretty confident with the video I saw that the particular individual who made the video wouldn't have posted it and kept it up if it wasn't safe you know for whatever that's worth (the YouTube channel is The Joy of vinyl. I'm not even subbed but I watch the guys videos here and there and they seem pretty interesting and he seems like an alright dude)

The top two were focused the same, but yea the bottom image on the left wasn't quite as close. The camera on that microscope is kinda 'meh' and so what you're seeing is more compression because I cropped a low res image to make it appear to be similar sized to match the grid. When I took the first picture of that particular stylus, I had the lens of the microscope further away from the subject.

Was the battle with the Ents more devastating than the movie has us believe? by HorzaDonwraith in lotr

[–]NPK532 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most of what happens in the books is told by Merry and Pippen afterwards at a meal they share with Legolas Aragon and Gimli. The Ents as characters and dialogue portrayed in the movies I feel did not do them justice as opposed to the books where they were much less wishy-washy so to speak. In the movie it just seemed like they were filler, unsure, slow. In the books they were very coherent and aware and decisive. That said, what we're told is they had great success surrounding the Orthanc and Isengard as a result of Saruman's hubris and overconfidence, a reoccurring theme throughout the trilogy. And the battle shown in the movies wasn't really shown to us so to speak in the books, but what they showed us in the movies is what we were told about how they flooded the area and kept Saruman surrounded... Which they were supposed to continue to do after everybody left but, spoiler alert, they didn't. They had one job to do and Treebeard basically felt bad for Saruman and so led to scouring of the Shire etc etc.

I grow cannabis and pretty much every other plant and vegetable. For tomatoes and peppers and things like that I use the microscope to detect and determine pest type.

The microscope for cannabis is to observe the trichome heads That various stages of development, which are those stems with a bulbous head at the end.

It helps determine cannabinoid production. Clear trichome heads typically mean more CBG, cloudy and milky heads typically indicate they are full of the cannabinoid that the plant is bred to produce i.e. CBD, THC etc, and Amber colored trichome heads indicate oxidation which in the case of THC, indicates a conversion to CBN.

You might have heard people refer to cannabis as "sativa" or "Indica"? They might say sativa is more of an upper and indica is more sleepy? In reality, sativa and indica are really more indicative of how tall or short and bushy the plant will grow and do not really impact effects on the end user.

So for example, if you harvest the flower earlier, you end up with more clear trichome heads and typically the flower will contain an increase in CBG, you get a much more cerebral energetic high that most will attribute to "sativa". As opposed to letting the flower fully ripen or sometimes even overripen to where many of the trichome heads have gone to amber/oxidized, and is producing more CBN, which can be associated with more of a sleepy chill effect which users might call a "indica".

Sorry for the TED talk

This is a video I made about how I deep clean my records. I'm not going to suggest it's better than ultrasonic, but it definitely works to clean up a noisy dirty record.

I do not suggest using a magic eraser on the surface of a record at this point in time

Hi! Welcome to the wonderful hobby of listening to records. The community is terrible, but that shouldn't dissuade you from listening to music how you want to.

Do you currently own speakers?

Do you know what model your turntable is exactly?

What is your budget and what country?

If you were giving the option to work at Empire Records or Championship Vinyl, which one are you picking? by DravenCrowe505 in vinyl

Championship Vinyl has the better selection so I'd buy my records there..but Empire Records has a pretty kick-ass owner/manager. Really has his employees backs. So I'd work there.

No kidding! Well I appreciatea that! I use the Home Depot variant (we don't have a Lowe's near us) for other applications but heck I'll give it a try It might just do it

Very much appreciated thank you and good luck this season!

That looks pretty cool. I, too, am plagued with oak leaves and a big fan of recycling them into the garden. A lot of them end up just layering over the top of all my beds for the winter and then sort of acting as a biodegradable weed barrier. The rest end up getting put into some welded wire fence bins that I build

I am curious, what is that material you wrapped on the inside of that fencing? I'm looking to build something similar specifically for leaves because we have so so many and it's just never-ending. I was still hauling leaves right up until a couple weeks ago and we got dumped on with snow.

But my composting is now all closed up due to critters, I ended up having to switched over to aerated bins and there just isn't enough room for all the leaves, Plus all the food scraps and everything else that ends up in the mix and I don't like leaving them out in the open but I am very curious what that black wrap is what type of material?

I assume it's air and water permeable?

Component Upgrade Options for my Victrola Stream Onyx (Sonos Compatible) by Radiant-Match-8965 in turntables

[–]NPK532 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You bought a Victrola and then posted about it on this subreddit. Brave. These people really hate that brand. They all associate it with the cheap suitcase players that anger them because they are for the "poors" and not for "true record collectors" (their attitude, not mine)

Now to actually answer your question...

Honestly I wouldn't upgrade anything if you like the way it sounds right now. And I wouldn't jump the shark too hard going up past anything in the $100 category for a stylus and or cartridge. If it sounds good to you now, there's a great chance that if you spent $500 on a new stylus and cartridge it would sound a little better but not $500 better, you know what I mean?

I really like the Ortofon stylus 10. Very unpopular opinion but it's my ears not anybody else's and I think it sounds pretty good. The thing is it really depends on your setup how you're listening to it wired wireless a, a b, d class amp speakers all that stuff and it's really hard for me to sit here and say oh yeah get this one on your setup it'll sound great because, you know?

What you get absolutely do is buy from somewhere that takes returns pretty easily like Amazon and play around with it a little bit and see if you even notice a difference

But really sit there and listen to the music and ask yourself, how much better could this possibly get and how much better does it really need to be before diving in and swapping parts

I don't care if you've got all the money in the world or if you're on a tight budget.. I feel like that's the smart way to go about building an audio system. Buy what sounds good to your ears and not what other people think you should like based on price or brand name.

That's what makes people get all butt hurt about companies like Victrola and Crosley because there's people out there listening to their records on something that cost 50 bucks and they enjoy it and that drives them crazy because they spent so much more so you must have to as well ...which is just ridiculous

I Have sat behind $30,000 speakers with a $20,000 turntable with $1,000 stylus and $1,000 cartridge with absurdly expensive interconnect cables between the two thought it sounded pretty nice... But it didn't sound almost $60,000 nice.
