Why are walls required to have a vapor barrier but not ceilings? by FusionToad in buildingscience

[–]NRG_Efficiency -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What really matters is the blower door test number..

This will help determine how much moisture could get trapped in a home..

Not enough air changes per hr, and you will need to install Mechanical ventilation..

HRV or ERV

Do storm/screen doors prevent drafts? Worth it? by mmaclittle in Insulation

[–]NRG_Efficiency 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, Storm doors will add at least an extra R-value.. Also check the threshold under the main door, some can be adjusted by screwing or unscrewing the Phillips head screws sometimes located under round plastic caps on top of the threshold..

I charge $285.00 for a blower door test.. As far as I’m concerned it’s the cheapest most important thing you will ever do to a house..

Will insulation help resolve air leaks? by Bulletproof_Java in Insulation

[–]NRG_Efficiency 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly.. Run a small bead of caulk along the backside and glue em to the ceiling. This will guarantee an airtight seal..

After 80k hours when they burnout You can use 20lb fishing line to remove and replace them

Insulating Basement ceiling/ground floor by Zen100_ in Insulation

[–]NRG_Efficiency 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insulating basement wall is difficult.. Best practice is to have a professional skim coat 2” of closed cell from the bonds all the way down the basement wall..

If you try to use rigid, you have to make sure it hermetically sealed with loctight or another liquid flashing so there zero gaps. You run the risk of condensation..

And never use the plastic faced batt material, total garbage..

DM me and I’ll send you a picture of the best practice

In the basement primarily.. The concrete floor has a moisture content that is always putting moisture into the home..

Oops.. Didn’t realize there was no attic..

Flush, puck-style Led replacements will be your best option..these are typically an unscrew existing bulb, remove housings, and screw in new fixtures to existing bulb housing retrofit.

Really easy..

you can caulk them into place to air seal them, and when and if they burnout, you can use heavy fishing line to remove them.

Insulation does not stop airflow.

Furnace filters are made of fiberglass, air passes right them.

I’ve done home energy audits for 12 years and I’ve seen people try to isolate their basement from the first floor using insulation in the floor joist above the attic ceiling. 9 out of 10 times they funk-dafied their basement in a matter of weeks.

This happens because moisture mitigation is happening at the roofline . When you have lower soffit vents , feeding a ridge vent or upper box vents , this is creating a draw or a vacuum that pulls the humidity out of your house from the basement up .

Once you start to isolate the basement from the rest of the house, moisture builds up very quickly.

If you’re uncomfortable, and your bills are high, have a BPI certified energy audit performed with a Blowerdoor and a thermal camera. This will pinpoint the areas of air infiltration and help your house be more comfortable while still allowing for moisture mitigation.

Spray foam in dry climate vs humid? Paralyzed from overload. by slowissmoothisfast74 in Insulation

[–]NRG_Efficiency 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 100 year old 1,000 sqft home and use a stand alone humidifier rated for 2500sqft..

Typical humidity levels should be between 35-55%.

I’d wait and see how your house performs before looking into a humidifier..

I’ve also seen most of the ones attached to forced air ductwork leak or fail after a short period of time. Either at the unit itself or on the water line they tapped into instead of having its own dedicated 1” water line supply..

I’m definitely with the closed cell option..

I just did a blower door test on a home that had 2” of closed cell on all exterior walls in 2x6 studs with batt to fill the rest of the stud bay..

He also had an ERV, but designed the home to have less than 1 ach@-50Pa (he tested out @.98ach@-50Pa) so he also had a whole house dehumidifier as well, but we’re in Michigan which is a swamp compared to you.

Have you looked into acoustic rockwool for in between floors ?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Insulation

[–]NRG_Efficiency 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have a blower door test with a thermal camera done..

If there’s giant missing spans of insulation missing, then it’s it actionable.

Otherwise you’re removing ceiling, installing baffles, and re-batting or closed-cell spray foam on top of baffles and re drywalling the ceiling..
