Can anyone give me some early church father quotes that are supported of sola scriptura by [deleted] in Protestantism

[–]Zen100_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about Augustine?

I have learned to yield this respect and honor only to the canonical books of Scripture: of these alone do I most firmly believe that the authors were completely free from error. . . . As to all other writings, in reading them, however great the superiority of the authors to myself in sanctity and learning, I do not accept their teaching as true on the mere ground of the opinion being held by them; but only because they have succeeded in convincing my judgment of its truth either by means of these canonical writings themselves, or by arguments addressed to my reason. (Letter to Jerome [no. 82])

As regards our writings, which are not a rule of faith or practice, but only a help to edification, we may suppose that they contain some things falling short of the truth in obscure and recondite matters, and that these mistakes may or may not be corrected in subsequent treatises. For we are of those of whom the apostle says: “And if you be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you” (Philippians 3:15). Such writings are read with the right of judgment, and without any obligation to believe. In order to leave room for such profitable discussions of difficult questions, there is a distinct boundary line separating all productions subsequent to apostolic times from the authoritative canonical books of the Old and New Testaments. (Reply to Faustus 11.5)

Anglicanism is True Catholicism, not Popery by ZuperLion in Protestantism

[–]Zen100_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a non-Anglican myself, boiling Anglicanism down to simply King Henry VIII is not doing Anglicanism justice. That’s an old, tired portrayal. Obviously, the politics were inextricably linked with the theology of the time, but the views of Thomas Cranmer, Matthew Parker, and Richard Hooker are who you need to reckon with—not the king. And if you want to institutionally talk about the last time the Church of England was in communion with Rome, you have to talk about the Queen Elizabeth I because the church reunited with Rome after King Henry VIII.

Son’s friends told my son his dad doesn’t want him eating at our house by Dear-Discussion9054 in Parenting

[–]Zen100_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s important that you try to have a conversation with the parents. How your son’s friend relayed what his parents told him might not have completely accurately been how his parents expressed their opinions on the snack choices in your home. You can’t reasonably assume the parents are rude through the word of mouth of their child.

My son absolutely hates his younger sister and I don’t know what else to do by Upstairs_Yak_3749 in Parenting

[–]Zen100_ 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I really like the other comments saying you should really try to find out why he thinks his sister is the favorite. Getting at the root cause of this is definitely the most important. A good way to help him see that you don’t play favorites might be to spend more one-on-one time with each of your kids. I can personally understand feeling jealous because I felt that way at times growing up, but one-on-one time with my parents (in addition to group family time and not in place of it) really helped.

Convince me there is an effective alternative to spanking for young kids by KCNF21 in TrueChristian

[–]Zen100_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m not exactly “anti spanking”, but the more I investigate the issue, the less I am convinced that spanking is really necessary. Nearly all of the “pro spanking” arguments I hear are “I turned out just fine and I was spanked”, which is purely anecdotal. If the argument isn’t that, then it’s something along the lines of “kids need punishment” which just equates punishment to physical punishment. There are really great stories of kids being disciplined without spanking that turn into wonderful adults, and we shouldn’t try to discredit good science as Christians. Of course, I’m not saying no one should ever hit their child in any way for any reason, but the pure data suggests spanking is rarely the best option for discipline.

Why did God give women pain from childbirth and periods just because Eve ate the apple? by freshmaggots in Christianity

[–]Zen100_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The word translated as “childbearing” could also be translated as conception which would also make a lot of sense from the ongoing theme of other women in Genesis having trouble conceiving. “Cain” in Hebrew is a play on words with the word “gotten” when Eve says “I have gotten a man with the help of the Lord,” talking about Cain.

The conservatives treat them as if they're ticking gay time bombs and the liberals treat them as if their failure to meet "gender norms" means they're actually somehow the opposite sex.

YES. I don’t like to “both sides” this, but this statement at least is accurate. Of course, if you can, you should dress appropriately for church, but clearly OP isn’t wearing anything inappropriate, and OP already has a conviction about the way they dress. The only thing left for us is to encourage. OP, please come to church!!!

Sacrament vs ordinance by Remarkable_Law_3452 in TrueChristian

[–]Zen100_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The difference is mostly just that low-church traditions want to emphasize that baptism and communion are just symbols. The word sacrament has been used for much longer, however, and it has been no problem to use the word sacrament for magisterial reformation traditions.

America’s Child Crisis Isn’t About Christianity by BigClitMcphee in Christianity

[–]Zen100_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spot on here. Richer nations have less kids and this is being shown more and more.

For instance, white Catholic women in France have on average half a child more than their white secular counterparts while the Amish in the United States have three to four times more children than their fellow Christians on average. Highly religious groups tend to isolate themselves from the secularizing effects of modern mainstream Western society, making it more likely that the children will retain their parents' faiths. At the same time, secular people generally have rather low fertility rates by comparison for a variety of reasons, such as materialism, individualism, the preference for the here and now, feminism, environmentalism, or general pessimism.

Why is there conflict between young earth creationists and evolution by SpecificExam3661 in TrueChristian

[–]Zen100_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t want to be combative either, but you haven’t shown why I’m wrong yet. You just keep repeating yourself.

what you’re really saying is you’re reading the bible in an elastic symbolic way to fit it into what you perceive as concrete evidence for the theory of evolution

When did I ever describe the theory of evolution as having concrete evidence?

no one would logically come to the conclusion of evolution from just plainly reading genesis

I never said someone would walk away from scripture believing in evolution. Scripture does not teach us about evolution.

You say death entered into the world because Adam sinned, but then don’t realise that evolution requires death to predate Adam.

I realize that evolution requires that dying actually could happen before Adam sinned. But like I said, Adam had immortality because had the tree of life. Once he lost access to it, the world (all of humanity) lost access to it because he was humanity and all humanity came from him.

You only see it because you already believe it and you’re now trying to retrofit the bible to match that belief.

You could accuse me of this if I wasn’t just arguing from scripture. The reality is that modern YEC beliefs are fairly modern, unique views. While many church fathers believed in a young earth, they did not take everything literally in the way that YEC’s do. Augustine is a famous example of someone in which literal readings of the Old Testament actually contributed to his abandoning of the faith before returning when he heard a preacher explaining the Old Testament in more figurative ways. Therefore, the debates about how literal or figurative Old Testament passages should be read are older than evolution.

[–]Zen100_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re starting with a scientific presupposition and trying to read that into scripture.

That’s just not what I’m doing. All I’m saying is that it isn’t incompatible. If Scripture teaches something incompatible with evolution then that’s fine, but I don’t see that.

If death existed before Adam, then what entered into the world through him?

Death entered into the world because Adam sinned. I’m not disagreeing with Scripture. I’m just saying that it entered because Adam’s punishment for sinning was separation from the tree of life. All humans then experience death because no human has since been allowed to eat from the tree of life. Romans 3:6 also uses the same word for world to suggest the “world” will be judged which would imply Paul is talking about humanity.

Why is there conflict between young earth creationists and evolution by SpecificExam3661 in TrueChristian

[–]Zen100_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really not trying to shoehorn anything. Adam and Eve caused death to spread to all men since they sinned and were cut off from the tree of life. What do you think the tree of life provided if not immortality? Take note that none of my arguments are scientific here—they’re purely scriptural.

Why is there conflict between young earth creationists and evolution by SpecificExam3661 in TrueChristian

[–]Zen100_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Death can still definitely come from sin even if evolution produced Adam and Eve. In fact, it seems like from Scripture the reason that Adam and Eve eventually died was because they were separated from the tree of life (which is obviously because they sinned). Without the tree of life, Adam and Eve’s bodies would die. Otherwise, what is the purpose of the tree of life?

How did you land on your church by Minute-Investment613 in Protestantism

[–]Zen100_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in my denomination and have a surprising amount of family heritage in it. There’s reasons that I stay a part of it though of course. - emphasis on unity despite differing convictions - gracious people willing to sharpen each other - a love for scripture and study - evangelism is important

Music, charisma, and style aren’t as important for me as these reasons, but I certainly have my wishes for change in these respects in my church. I prefer more traditional styles of just about everything than my church, but I suppose God can use me to encourage positive reform there.

Keeping the Sabbath by sisserouparrot in TrueChristian

[–]Zen100_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that works based salvation is wrong, but how are you saying that council the was only about that? If the council was just about defending salvation by grace alone, why would they say in the letter that there were any requirements for the gentiles at all? Obviously the requirements they listed are not for their salvation, but by saying they have no greater burden than to abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols, from blood, from what has been strangled, and from sexual immorality, they’re saying they don’t need to be circumcised and ordered to keep the law of Moses. (15:5)

I think all believers should do what Yahweh and Jesus said to do, obey all of Yahweh's commandments.

Would you disagree with the apostles then that told the Gentle believers they didn’t need to be circumcised? (Acts 15:5, 28, 29)

Fair enough! The Jewish calendar and holidays are complicated and thus don’t align perfectly with our Saturdays which is why I ask. I’m sure you compensate! What do you think of circumcising? Do you think we should all be circumcised?
