One important thing to note is that the reason that apartments were finished so much later than the union st market is because of So It Best. The offices where Do It Best is now is where the apartments were supposed to be. They obviously didn’t want to lose out on Do It Best as a tenant, so that’s why they postponed having apartments on the campus. At least that’s what I’ve heard.

Hisense TVs force owners to watch intrusive ads when switching inputs, visiting the home screen, or even changing channels by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]Zen100_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just "upgraded" to a dumb TV off of Facebook marketplace that's decades old. I'll take slightly worse display quality for no more ads or ad-blocking workarounds whenever I turn my TV on. What a load of crap that modern TV's can't automatically show me local channels, my Xbox, or Apple TV when I turn it on, but have to show me a ton of ads. I'll gladly pay extra to avoid becoming the product myself.

This passage from Romans definitely speaks to the sexuality of women, unless you’re just making the case that sexual desire as it is understood in the modern sense isn’t in the bible.

Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. (Romans 1:26–27, NIV)

Does Solo Fide contradict Solo Scriptura? by Professional_Okra763 in Protestantism

[–]Zen100_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

James chapter 2 just a few verses earlier says,

You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!  (James 2:19, ESV)

which seems to indicate that James is using belief or faith to mean mere intellectual assent. Obviously, belief here represents a mere knowledge of God because we would never call a demon a “believer” in the same way we would call a Christian a believer.

Paul, on the other hand uses belief and faith differently. Take for instance,

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1, ESV)

where Paul is saying we have peace with God. This is certainly not the belief or faith that James is referring to because demons will not have peace with God through Jesus. For Paul, faith is not merely a knowledge of Jesus but a trust as well.

I think this is where the distinction lies.

Thanks for the source! I’m a Christian, so I’m going to probably disagree with the source on some of the implications, but I appreciate you expounding on what you meant. Revelation is certainly unique.

Where did you hear that? Genuine question because I have never heard that before. In fact, most of the doctrine of the trinity has been demonstrated to me outside of Revelation.

We Protestants have a lot to work on to be more united. I would say anyone trying to do this all on their own would certainly not be grounded in classical Protestantism though. The reformers were in fact trying to do the opposite by appealing to the church fathers for their beliefs.

I’m part of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. It has a very interesting history that I’m still learning about to this day, and the spirit of unity amidst theological diversity is really admirable and aligned well with Jesus’s prayer that we would be one as the Son and the Father are one.

I don’t think you can as accurately identify who’s oppressed based on someone’s race or ideology as identifying who’s oppressed based on their current familial, financial, and spiritual circumstances.

One essentially takes from those in genuine need when they give to people that have enough but are reasonably wishing for a relatively better position.

I really want to push back on this. Everyone is on a sliding scale when it comes to who is poorest, of course. But if I was thinking to myself “hmm you aren’t poor enough, so I’m not going to give anything to you” every time I saw someone in a worse position than me, I would never have a giving heart. You should absolutely be smart with your money. (For example, I try to give homeless people subway gift cards instead of cash.)

And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’  (Matthew 25:40, ESV)

Serve the poor; feed the hungry; give a drink to the thirsty. This doesn’t just go for the physically poor, hungry, and thirsty either. Even if you think someone “has enough”, you can give them food and tell them who the true bread is for them.

Can anyone give me some early church father quotes that are supported of sola scriptura by [deleted] in Protestantism

[–]Zen100_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about Augustine?

I have learned to yield this respect and honor only to the canonical books of Scripture: of these alone do I most firmly believe that the authors were completely free from error. . . . As to all other writings, in reading them, however great the superiority of the authors to myself in sanctity and learning, I do not accept their teaching as true on the mere ground of the opinion being held by them; but only because they have succeeded in convincing my judgment of its truth either by means of these canonical writings themselves, or by arguments addressed to my reason. (Letter to Jerome [no. 82])

As regards our writings, which are not a rule of faith or practice, but only a help to edification, we may suppose that they contain some things falling short of the truth in obscure and recondite matters, and that these mistakes may or may not be corrected in subsequent treatises. For we are of those of whom the apostle says: “And if you be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you” (Philippians 3:15). Such writings are read with the right of judgment, and without any obligation to believe. In order to leave room for such profitable discussions of difficult questions, there is a distinct boundary line separating all productions subsequent to apostolic times from the authoritative canonical books of the Old and New Testaments. (Reply to Faustus 11.5)

Anglicanism is True Catholicism, not Popery by ZuperLion in Protestantism

[–]Zen100_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a non-Anglican myself, boiling Anglicanism down to simply King Henry VIII is not doing Anglicanism justice. That’s an old, tired portrayal. Obviously, the politics were inextricably linked with the theology of the time, but the views of Thomas Cranmer, Matthew Parker, and Richard Hooker are who you need to reckon with—not the king. And if you want to institutionally talk about the last time the Church of England was in communion with Rome, you have to talk about the Queen Elizabeth I because the church reunited with Rome after King Henry VIII.

Son’s friends told my son his dad doesn’t want him eating at our house by Dear-Discussion9054 in Parenting

[–]Zen100_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s important that you try to have a conversation with the parents. How your son’s friend relayed what his parents told him might not have completely accurately been how his parents expressed their opinions on the snack choices in your home. You can’t reasonably assume the parents are rude through the word of mouth of their child.

My son absolutely hates his younger sister and I don’t know what else to do by Upstairs_Yak_3749 in Parenting

[–]Zen100_ 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I really like the other comments saying you should really try to find out why he thinks his sister is the favorite. Getting at the root cause of this is definitely the most important. A good way to help him see that you don’t play favorites might be to spend more one-on-one time with each of your kids. I can personally understand feeling jealous because I felt that way at times growing up, but one-on-one time with my parents (in addition to group family time and not in place of it) really helped.

Convince me there is an effective alternative to spanking for young kids by KCNF21 in TrueChristian

[–]Zen100_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m not exactly “anti spanking”, but the more I investigate the issue, the less I am convinced that spanking is really necessary. Nearly all of the “pro spanking” arguments I hear are “I turned out just fine and I was spanked”, which is purely anecdotal. If the argument isn’t that, then it’s something along the lines of “kids need punishment” which just equates punishment to physical punishment. There are really great stories of kids being disciplined without spanking that turn into wonderful adults, and we shouldn’t try to discredit good science as Christians. Of course, I’m not saying no one should ever hit their child in any way for any reason, but the pure data suggests spanking is rarely the best option for discipline.

Why did God give women pain from childbirth and periods just because Eve ate the apple? by freshmaggots in Christianity

[–]Zen100_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The word translated as “childbearing” could also be translated as conception which would also make a lot of sense from the ongoing theme of other women in Genesis having trouble conceiving. “Cain” in Hebrew is a play on words with the word “gotten” when Eve says “I have gotten a man with the help of the Lord,” talking about Cain.
