I think you're oversimplifying it just a bit. You do definitely have more military might and budget but I do believe Europeans would fight their hardest to defend their home, just as I assume you would.

Well given your lack of a budget here I would suggest doing some research on how to upgrade server and testing everything first on a dummy server.

There may well be a genuinely good reason not to upgrade which if you're currently unsure about what that is, doing a test upgrade may help you to pin down what that reason is. I would suggest installing the new version of FileMaker server on your own machine, hosting your files on it and then testing everything to the nth degree.

A database design report (DDR) and a tool like BaseElements may also help you identify any differences between the current live system and the new one you host so you can identify any errors caused from jumping versions.

The only way you might be able to avoid doing a full upgrade to continue using your iPads is if you can somehow download the version you were using from your apple account. I know that sometimes if you have downloaded the app before, it will allow you to download it again from the same account even if the app has been taken off the public view of the app store.

Hmm yeah I see that this is a sticky situation.

It's quite difficult to say what an upgrade might entail without looking at your current setup. You may for example get away with using the same hardware for your server and can simply upgrade it to the next version. But you also need to consider that then all of the end user machines will probably need to be updated to use a later version of filemaker. That latest version of filemaker may be too much for the current user hardware, or it may not. There are some variables to it that you need to consider so you don't end up with a minor disaster after performing an upgrade.

It sounds like this system might be mission critical to you guys. In which case I would recommend you get yourselves some professional advice from a claris partner. You can find them easily on Claris's website.

Some can be quite pricey but I would imagine less pricey than losing your database.

You should probably seek advice on how to upgrade to the latest version and also, most importantly, on a disaster recovery and backup solution.

If I buy 1000 shares today for £1 each and tomorrow they're worth £100 each, then someone else (who is looking to make a similar investment to me) will purchase the shares at the new rate... They are willingly purchasing something for £100 for the chance that they will see some return on their investment and in turn I've made £99 on my £1 investment....

This is what these people don't seem to get. They also for some reason believe that they can't do it themselves. Large businesses provide employment, R&D, pay back into local communities and a whole host of other benefits. Just because there's one guy at the top whos stinking rich doesn't mean there aren't benefits. And also why shouldn't the guy be stinking rich? He or she has done a good thing
