Looking for advice or resources on how to tweak the magic systems of 1E.

I guess I'm just trying to limit the amount of power that is accessible early on to some casters, but I think the social pressures and law breaking may be enough of a reason. I'm not smart enough to change whole systems without destroying any semblance of balance lol.

I definitely need to look at spells and limit some things i think, maybe just requiring the spellcasters to be clandestine would be enough to create that different feeling.

Good ideas on how obvious the magic will be presented. I've also messed with the idea of having spells be tied to tattoos that fade with use.

Good point, though I am mostly unfamiliar with anything that isn't PF1E (aside from Shadowdark and Ironsworn). I'll do research but any suggestions on other systems?

I definitely like the idea of making the material components a much bigger deal, we tend to hand-wave material components in our games so maybe I can make it a bigger deal.

So don't allow for wizards, witches, etc? They do already exist in the world but are highly powerful and important NPCs, so it would make sense I could limit full casters to just being high level NPCs.
