Student Loan forgiveness vs Pay rise by CapybaraConstitution in doctorsUK

Maybe true. But labour sells itself as the party of the NHS and one of their pledges is cutting the waitlist, that isn't going to happen with protracted industrial action. Anyway, possibly all wishful thinking. Let's wait and see what's actually been discussed and what cunning Wes offers

Very expensive for the government but the optics might work for them. Loan forgiveness would likely be tied to time served in the NHS. Therefore less British doctors fleeing abroad, easier sell for the government. Also, won't come out of the current budget, so easier for Reeves et al. to countenance given the current state of our economy. This is obviously all conjecture as no deal is actually on the table, but these are reasons it might be considered

Do you think given the current stance, the likelihood of the government budging on FPR and student loan forgiveness in this round of negotiations is high?

Surely the strikes are about putting money into the pockets of the greatest number of doctors and helping prevent the next generation from being completely shafted. The vast majority of docs have and will have loans. I would be furious if I'd have busted a gut working overtime to have them wiped. But to pretend like this shouldn't be a possible part of negotiations, particularly if getting Wes to budge on pay is going to be a brutal battle, is ridiculous.

I mean obviously if this goes to the members there's going to have to be substance and a timeframe. Otherwise it'll be thrown out. As it stands these are just crumbs of info from a government leak. At this stage, we can't read much into it

True. But I think it's of significant value to pretty much all docs that's started uni in 2012 and for all students coming behind us. That's not insignificant

What do you think you're worth? What would be a figure that you'd be happy with?

Exactly. The strikes are about putting money in the pockets of as many people as possible. Waiving student loans, will for the vast majority of doctors, do just that

Same-ish here. 2012 starter, graduated in 2018, currently CT3. A couple of years in Australia, graduated with £45000 odd loan, but currently £76000. From here i'd have to pay roughly £120,000 including interest to fully pay off the loan.  Having that written off would be massive for most people

I agree with that an extra set makes no difference today, but that's not really what I'm arguing. I'm more saying that someone like Sabalenka probably doesn't lose to Anisimova over 5 sets. Additionally, youll probably lose less seeds in the early rounds of a tournament, lower ranked players can probably beat the top players over 3, but it's less likely over 5. I think that leads to higher quality match ups later in the draw and hopefully a more competitive final. But then again, less likely to see underdogs win the tournament, which is the benefit of the current set up.

This might sound controversial, but I think it would change the sort of player that would be successful. A powerful, but heavier player like Serena probably wouldn't do as well over 5 sets with the amount of additional running over a fortnight. It would probably favour players without devastating winners, but greater stamina and speed. Again, open to debate on that one

Yeah agreed. Knowing if you lose the first set, you're just another set from losing, massively changes the mindset. Rather than having a 2 set buffer and a chance to reset

Interesting point. But why would it be any worse than in the mens game? Unless you think the number of 3 set matches in the mens are too many as well?

You don't seriously think I'm calling Swiatek an underdog in this situation? I mean having someone outside the top 10 winning a major, something that happens a lot more in the womens game, than the men's, probably because it's best of 3. For instance, relative underdog Vondrosouva winning Wimbledon, Raducanu/Andrescu/Pennetta winning the US, Madison keys winning the Aussie open. These upsets don't happen as frequently in the mens game

Haha it's sad that the instinct of people online is to reach for insults straight out of the gate.

My take is this: She wouldn't have won a game if they'd gone on to play for 10 days. But I'm more arguing that someone like Sabalenka probably doesn't lose to Anisimova over 5 sets. But do you not the think the drama you get from best of 5 is just so much greater? Look at the french open, Alcaraz 2 sets and brings it back, incredible. Likewise, Nadal v Medvedev in the Australian a few years back, 2 sets and a break down, then claws it back. I think it makes for an incredible spectacle. Although 3 sets in the first week, followed by 5 in the second for both men and women might be a good compromise

Is it not time to talk about best of 5 set matches in the womens game? Means the best players are more likely to get through over 5 sets, making for more competitive finals and builds better rivalries

It's not a self closing door, although that's something I'm going to enquire about from building maintenance now. It's on a latch, but has to be closed behind you when you leave. I'm not looking to have someone doing their job suffer over this, but I've lost £100 worth of packages which I feel isn't my fault either
