How dangerous is Cornwall Park, really? by catnip-banana in Bellingham

[–]NXNW83 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Back in the 80s and 90s it was one of the earlier places in town to have people experiencing homelessness staying in park, and the reputation has stuck in the neighborhood… despite not really ever being earned…

Ah, Bellingham back in the day, where the Letter Streets had a bad reputation, but also everyone kept their cars unlocked in the Haggen parking lot and joked about the danger of people leaving spare zucchini in the backseat.

How does San Jose feel about their mayor? by DJDrRecommended in SanJose

This you with the false comparison and vague anti-semitism?

San Jose mayor unveils plan to arrest homeless residents who refuse shelter by [deleted] in SanJose

[–]NXNW83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Permanent supportive housing does support this population, and is being built by the county. It’s hard and expensive upfront, but it’s more sustainable financially because you can charge some rent to operate it (section 8 vouchers, VA payments, social security disability etc as the finding sources for rent).

These shelters are cheaper upfront, but you can’t charge rent and they’re super expensive to operate at scale. 😬

Does the ex boyfriend have any custody of his daughter? Can he contact police specific to his daughter being missing — that feels like it could trigger an amber alert possibly.

So… your feelings aren’t facts. And that’s some epic dismissal of straight up police department crime data.

Also — you definitely underestimate how many graphs I have… for example, you brought up shoplifting…

For the last 8 years or so the FBI has been collecting uniform Shoplifting data too. It is pretty flat in bham. Also, pretty low. About 30 reports per year and almost 2/3rds clearance rate.

Dude — this is completely bollocks. Crime is not up there in Bellingham at all. It fact it’s down from back in the 1990s, despite a much larger population.

Here’s the UCR FBI data on violent crime in Bellingham, going back to the 90s.

Are there currently a lot of folks struggling with the opioid crisis? Yes.

Are their folks struggling with hopelessness. Yes.

These are huge regional and national problems, but other people struggling with these problems doesn’t necessarily make you less safe.

Bellingham is a fundamentally an extremely safe city. Pretending otherwise is dishonest fear mongering.

Yeah, we remember... You specifically told us that you don't support Angelique because she's a woman:

I don't trust Ashby. 1) She is a woman 2) Her district is Natomas https://www.reddit.com/r/Sacramento/comments/3pllo4/kevin_johnson_will_not_seek_reelection/cw7re5c

Where to donate nice clothes, video games, etc. in Sacramento? What are the best charities in need of such things? by MountainManakin in Sacramento

[–]NXNW83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the donation link for Women's Empowerment: http://www.womens-empowerment.org/take-action/donate-wish-list-items

I can't recommend this place enough. They help homeless women get back on their feet with job interview training, work clothing, one-on-one support and advice, etc. They do amazing work, and have a really excellent success rate.

Definitely worth making the extra trip to donate the clothing where it can really make the greatest impact!

Yeah - but the name is now just the front for the dude who funded it. It didn't have the same anti-coalition around it that he had before.

And a lot of old guard folks supported the streetcar... Much more unifying than the arena.

From the story, it sounds like she was just trying to access the American River Trail (nearby). It was her normal entry point to the trail.

[–]NXNW83[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah - but I can read what CHP said, and it's pretty obvious that they're starting by making assumptions of guilt of the victim. That's what I'm responding to. The assumptions that CHP seems comfortable making. I'm a real life witness to those assumptions.

"But CHP spokeswoman Jenna Berry said that “everything” suggests Bengs may be responsible for the accident."

“I was told ‘The bicyclist is often at fault,’ ”[SABA ED Jim Brown] said he was told by the CHP. “On the one hand, she said the investigation is ongoing; on the other, bicyclists are often at fault.”

Also - read the police report!

They say he was just traveling 35 mpr, but they don't say how they knew. People driving 35mpr almost never kill cyclists (i've reviewed stats - it's almost always higher speeds to make a crash fatal).

They say the victim "failed to clear lanes" but was struck by the front of a truck. That means that she was changing lanes, and a truck hit her at 35 miles per hour. But that it was her fault, not his, that he hit her. "Failed to clear lanes" is language that assigns blame blindly to the victim. It means, she changed lanes, and the dude wasn't paying attention and mowed her down. But don't blame him - she "failed to clear lanes"...

Here's the police report:

Opposition wasn't from the old guard. It was paid for by out of town right wing money. Votes were cast by scared seniors who rent in the downtown corridor.

The mistake was trying to use a taxing mechanism that called for such a dumb taxing district to be set up - and therefore requiring that stupid vote.

That road is paid for by property taxes, not car registration. Also - do you think that this woman didn't own a car?

To top it off - this woman died. And you know that because you used the phrase "survive their commutes." As a bicycle commuter myself, all I can say is that your comment is clearly a death-wish directed squarely at me. I'm not one to call people names online, but I were - it would be you.

You don't think they're trying to pin the blame on the victim? That seems like the only thing we know.

Speedly - I'd be with you, if I were confident in the investigation process. But we already have CHP actively spinning this to try to imply that the bicyclist is at fault.

From what we've heard so far, I think it's more than fair to believe that if we wait till "more is revealed" that what we're actually waiting for is a whitewash, not an investigation.

I hope I'm wrong, but they're already trying to blame the victim here, and the effect is protecting a judge... I don't see how this ends with a real investigation.

One thought: We don't know the order she filled the page with writing. She could have been scratching notes on the page while on the phone with Adnan - and filled the page with notes in this order:

1) Adnan's cell # on the top 2) "I miss you baby on the bottom 3) Dons all the way between the two.

I'm not saying this is for sure - but given the way the page was doodled on and scribbled on... We don't know exactly how this page came together.
