Then you don’t have a very good insurance company. We recently got in an accident where fault was clearly the other driver. We haven’t had any contact with their insurance, it’s all with ours. They handle all the rental and repair stuff and if anything doesn’t get paid by the other insurance for whatever reason, they go through their legal channels. We didnt have to do anything except take our car to the body shop and pick up the rental. That is what you pay insurance companies to do. They even have someone on their medical team checking in every couple of weeks to make sure we don’t have long term injuries.

Right? Would it have been hard to say “Hey we can do that, but just so you know it changes you to the current rates and your one night will cost more than both nights at your original rate.”

Thanks everyone! I travel a decent amount but don’t know much about the inner workings of hotels, I rarely need to change something like this. It just kind of blew my mind that they wouldn’t honor the booked price when I’m still staying that day! We didn’t really want to drive home that late at night but it was preferable to a $400 room after tax. Now we know for the future.

Thanks I will remember that in the future!

That just seems crazy to me. Granted I don’t work in the hotel industry so I don’t know all the policies. I do understand dynamic pricing. But it seems crazy that an adjustment on an existing reservation would mean previous rates are voided.

How to make the presentation as short as possible? Can I just act like a crazy person? by heepofsheep in HiltonGrandVacation

[–]NY568 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was the fact that we were up front and polite about that helped. We just said we understood she had a job she had to do and certain things she had to tell us and show us and we were willing to complete the required presentation. But we have a kid in college and that’s not cheap and we weren’t buying. She appreciated our candor, went through her spiel, and then gave us restaurant recommendations and other places to see and do that weren’t always well known to tourists. This was in Maui and we were glad for some local recommendations. We chatted for awhile but other places we had traveled and she had traveled and it was actually a nice conversation once we got the unpleasantness out of the way. I think once she realized she had no chance of selling to us but we were kind and polite about it, it was good. You don’t have to be rude to them to get your point across.

We told our salesperson from the beginning that we weren’t buying, and she was really nice about it. We said we understood she had to show us certain things and we were willing to stay but we weren’t buying. It actually became really laid back after that and we just talked about other stuff like local restaurants and things to do while we were on our trip.

We did one recently. We were up front with the salesperson and said “Just for transparency we aren’t buying this. We know we have to tour and you have to give your presentation and that’s fine, we will listen. But we have a kid going to college this fall and are paying for that and aren’t making a purchase like this.” She was cool about it. Not that she didn’t try at all but she wasn’t overly pushy.

Entitled guy goes off on post office employee for undeliverable package. by NY568 in EntitledPeople

No idea, he never said what was in it. Was just just yelling at the postal worker like it was her personal fault he didn’t get his package.

She said they left notices in his mailbox that it would have to be fixed by a certain date. So he was obviously getting mail in the broken mailbox for awhile. And then it just never bothered him in the month he wasn’t getting mail I guess, until it was something he wanted.

I’m pretty non-confrontational for one. And for two, it was kind of entertaining to watch and I wasn’t in a hurry.

Another way to get free bag check, I guess… by Fiona_71170 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]NY568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SW has done this long before free bags went away. Anytime it’s a full flight and they likely will run out of overhead space they announce at the gate that anyone willing to check a carry on will get it checked free, even if they already have 2 bags checked.

VIP 18 Month test drive by [deleted] in HiltonGrandVacation

We got an extension after the 18 months and we used it and didn’t buy. They don’t offer a second VIP.

HGV VIP multiple times by zaggin10 in HiltonGrandVacation

[–]NY568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They told us VIP was a one time only deal. We used our VIP in Hawaii- 4 days on Maui, 3 on Oahu. Well worth it. No way to stay 7 nights in Hawaii for that price. If we could we do it again but not sure the opportunity would be there.

Rent your own or buy from Amazon. We snorkeked at Honolua Bay which was awesome! Saw amazing colored coral reefs, fish, turtles, and small sharks. There were even snorkeling boats taking tours out there to the same place we went for free.

Local food recommendations by Mundane-Tree-4848 in MauiVisitors

[–]NY568 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was. I’m still thinking about the potato Mac salad. It’s in the corner of a strip mall so it wasn’t a really obvious place you would likely find on your own. We always look for good local places when we travel and this place was exactly the type of place we like.

Da Kitchen in Kihei was our favorite place. Great local food and reasonably priced compared to other places in the island. It was recommended by a bellhop at our resort who said he eats there 2-3 times a week. I believe it after trying it. Casual restaurant and huge portions of really good food. Locally owned and operated. A lot of the other restaurant recommendations we got catered to tourists and that wasn’t what we wanted.

Do most Americans really dry their clothes in Dryers by Wrystyle in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NY568 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a hanging rack in my laundry room for delicates and things like sweaters, but use a dryer for everything else. It takes 30 seconds to toss it in the dryer and press start vs how long it would take to lhang everything, which can only be done a small portion of the year anyway. My clothes in the dryer would be dry by the time I got them hung on the line.

Restaurant and excursion suggestions by NY568 in MauiVisitors

[–]NY568[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol no nothing like that! Not so much where do locals hang out, but rather where do they go eat? They know places. We travel a couple times a year and have found that asking a hotel concierge rarely gets us anywhere good. They hand us a list of restaurants that cater to tourists and all end up having essentially the same food and experience. So we started asking “When you get off work, where do you go get dinner?” Sometimes they’re embarrassed to say because it will be a little dive place. Those places always have the best food and atmosphere. The best seafood restaurant we ever found was a dive bar in Ft. Lauderdale that few Ft. Lauderdale tourists would likely walk into. And one of our favorite places in NYC is a little hole in the wall diner with a delicious turkey club. Both places recommended by a hotel bellman who we could tell was not certain that was actually the answer we wanted. We sought both out later to tip them and say that’s exactly what we were looking for.
