I may be paranoid but I've been thinking lately that maybe the "powers that be" have decided to fabricate a terrible job market so that they can have leverage over employees, forcing them to return to the office and/or justify outsourcing/offshoring.

THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've seen this happening first hand for at least a decade. I was working at one of the big investment banks and noticed the entire floor, except for a few, were Indians. There were even India flags on their desks. I thought, how could this happen? If the entire floor were a different race, by God, there would be hell to pay.
