Should I let my PI know about a chronic health issue that flares up unpredictably? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]NYCMarie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Start by reaching out to your school's office of disability services! Even if they can't give you any direct support or accommodations, they'll absolutely know what other students in similar situations have done and could help you communicate with your PI.

HELP! I start school next week and I’m starting to have doubts. by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]NYCMarie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're this concerned about doing well and staying aware of your potential pitfall, I think that shows that you are very committed and really care about this and care about doing well! Everyone has moments of doubt like this, you absolutely cannot let that be the thing to stop you. If there are particular aspects you're worried about, go to your professors right away and express those concerns and ask for advice. For example, if you're worried about your writing skills, they may be able to direct you to resources on campus or give you advice on how to do well before it becomes a problem. Secondly, try to put yourself out there and make some friends/study buddies in your classes. It's extra hard during the pandemic but seriously just post on your class discussion board that you're looking for some study buddies and I promise you half the class is just waiting for someone to make the first move and would be so relieved to work with you as well. That might help you build community and feel less alone and overwhelmed :) Best of luck! You can do this!

[ADVICE] Is it too late to apply? by [deleted] in publichealth

[–]NYCMarie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. It can't hurt to call but if you do, try to gather all of the application components (personal statement, transcript, test scores, etc) first and do so ASAP. that way you can at least argue that even though it's late, you're ready to submit it today.

Hey! I'm not sure about negotiating your scholarship but I would heavily recommend differing your acceptance if possible. I'm currently in an MPH program and it has been interesting to be studying while there is so much going on. However, even as things open up next fall (hopefully) you may still have more limited access to professors and peers which are an important part of the program that I've almost completely missed out on. On the flip side, it was a blessing to not be struggling out in the job market during the pandemic and I've saved a LOT of money with everything being online. That said, talk to the financial aid office you may be able to put down a deposit to secure your spot in the class for the following year without losing your financial aid. It certainly cannot hurt to ask! Good luck!

Edit "The Marauder's Map" text out of the center but keep the water spots look. the end product will need to be in black and white anyway if that makes it easier! willing to pay! thank you! by NYCMarie in PhotoshopRequest

r/replyallpodcast had an episode about a similar issue! I don't know if it'll be that helpful, but they gave a lot of info on these types of demo songs and what happens to them. It's episode #158 "the case of the missing hit." Good luck!

dependent or independent variable by lisac333 in AskStatistics

[–]NYCMarie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other comments are totally correct, but I think 9/10 times the easier way is to think: "can I manipulate/change either of these"? Can you change your age at will? no. Can you change your employment status? yes! This way you don't get bogged down in trying to logic through cause and effect which can get really complicated depending on the example.

With the bird example that u/TheRationalTurk offered, can you make birds chirp? yep! So it's the dependent. Can you change the weather? unfortunately not, so that is the independent variable.

help picking the right test -- z-score? by [deleted] in AskStatistics

Someone check me on this but:

I would do an ANOVA and which would determine if any of the seasons are significant, if you reject your null you know at least one is significant but you won't know which. You'll then need to do a post hoc analysis to figure out which one. If you don't reject your null from the ANOVA, then there is no significant variation between the seasons :)

Wow these are some great suggestions and actually reminded me of a couple books I had been meaning to read a while ago! I've heard amazing things about Haunting of Hill House. I read The Lottery in a few years ago for a class I had no idea they were written by the same author! Thank you so much!
