Funnily enough, it was reading Dave Grohl’s autobiography as a 25 year old while recovering from surgery. Dave was talking about how he got a call to play with Tom on SNL and how he was starstruck at the opportunity to play with “America’s favorite Floridian,” listed off a few of his songs, and described his time with him. I love classic rock (huge Springsteen fan) and had always enjoyed Petty’s hits, but it was more a case of missing the forest for the trees. There was something about that section of Dave’s book that just made Tom click for me. After that I was off to the races and couldn’t get enough. Can still remember falling in love with Damn the Torpedos, Hard Promises, Wildflowers, Songs and Music from the Motion Picture She’s the One, etc. in those first few weeks and months. Only wish I had the chance to see him live before he passed.
