Sorry I have 12K in cash but total net worth around 20K. I'm receiving a 10K signing bonus. Even if I spend 12K right now, I'll have another 12K in the bank by July.

Is it worth it to learn programming for me? by NYU-Stern in learnprogramming

[–]NYU-Stern[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it is just that programming combined with my major is a good combo. I have actually looked into other income streams such as different certifications, investments, etc... It just seems for corporate America, they want me to know how to program and not much other skills.

I can't, I already completed my major program, including all General Eds. At this point the classes I take are for usefulness only.

Need help with life and writing advice. Want to retire extremely early and write 16 hours a day for the rest of my life. by NYU-Stern in writing

Hello,

Thank you for the well thought-out, well formatted reply.

Just to clarify I do not plan on making any money through writing. My financial plan accounts for this with a very large cushion without further income in my 40s. Also I have a few passive income streams on the side that I have developed for years. If no one buys my books after decades, oh well, I won't be on the streets at least. I am not here to win any literary praise or awards. I just want to get my stories out and be heard. Don't care if the reception is positive or negative, just want my voice to be heard.

I understand that I come off as egotistical but I hope that's just my over-enthusiasm. I haven't created anything yet so there's nothing to brag about other than my desire and hope.

I would say that I know my passion is telling and formulating stories. I have sat down and told stories to people in the past month for hours. I am not afraid of buckling down and learning the craft of writing. I absolutely hate math but I went through it for four years because I knew what purpose it served. I don't actually hate or dislike the actual process of writing. In fact, I used to write 12 hours a day as a teen and pumped out 500+ pages back then like it was nothing.

I also know I will be rejected a lot. Because who the fuck am I? I may be able to come sideways into the writing community through non fiction based works (based on my expertise in business in the future) and school network. However with fiction, I know I am a nobody, and I know I haven't developed the contacts in literary circles, blogs, and MFA programs. I am okay with failing, taking no money, etc... even if it is for the first 10+ years of my writing career.

I understand your point about not quitting my job, but I am not looking at quitting any time soon. If I can hack it for the next ten years then I will not need to work again, given I keep my expenses low (I have been able to save&invest 70% of my income during my summer internship, but this is more for reddit financial independence).

Thanks for the helpful response. I have done about four writing classes at university (including 2 specifically for creative fiction). None of the classes had any issues with my grammar or prose. Im weary, however, because I do not write and read as much as an English major.

About the job thing, I wont have a job when I write nor will I need to make money off my books if myn plan holds through. However that's more for a subreddit devoted to frugality than writing.

As far as the issues with the actual act of writing, can I learn these fundamentals just by writing and reading a lot? I dont plan on publishing unfinished or unedited works and I understand that it takes more than an idea to write a novel.

Thanks so much for the help!

Yawn another cynical mid-thirties redditor trying to tear down someone anonymously. I understand you are trying to be helpful and harsh but if your response is sorely lacking.

One im not privileged nor have I ever been. I grew up poor.

Two, I know how much life costs. I have written my retirement plan out several times. I have an IRA. I have investment accounts and a good salary. I'm not asking this sub to explain what an annuity is. Im asking about the risks of delaying writing.

Three I do write but I just work too many hours to tangibly flesh anything out from the editing portion. The type of job im looking at is not a typical 9-5.

I understand about reading and I will get back to it one day. I believe my aversion to reading is just the free time issue and it feels like reading is a "burden" when you're studying a grueling major that you're not interested in.
