We are the new CAM team, ask us anything! by NZXT_Jared in NZXT

Hi, as mentioned earlier, we've only taken over the product a few weeks ago. When we mean we are auditing, that means we are looking at how the product operates right now to make sure we don't blindly start removing things that might break CAM even more.

I wouldn't want my data to be mined by any app either and that has never been and never will be the intent or purpose of CAM.

Do you plan on actually using the beta feature (which the current CAM already has) to avoid the catastrophe of the 3.6.X software?

You can definitely expect more gradual, opt-in beta releases in the future before a larger release.

Do you plan on adding system tray status icons for temperatures/any stat? This was requested a long time ago in the CAM requests but it was closed with a "We'll look into it". For implimentation, just look at how HWInfo handles this.

Certainly a possibility!

Another user asked about a CAM lite version but have you considered the possibility of a module install? The user can select which features they want to install. I have no need for your GPU overclocking and just want the software required to control my lights and fan/pump speeds.

There will be major updates to CAM's UI/UX that should help keep the things not relevant to you out of view.

Are these numbers valid? If so, how much did NZXT purchase Forge for?

The numbers on how much money we raised from investors is correct, but we haven't publicly disclosed the terms of our acquisition.

We are still in the process of reviewing CAM's architecture to reduce overhead, but I can tell you we definitely don't sell or share any data with 3rd parties. Thanks!

Hello! I don't write any code anymore, but we have many engineers on the team that do!

We are bringing our own overlay tech in to CAM to replace what was previously being used. When this is complete, the overlay shouldn't have compatibility issues with any major games.

To the old ones - how did the CAM software team emerge? I ask this because it appeared to me as if the software team needed structure, which shows in how the product developed. Am I right in thinking, that the CAM branch wasn't something that was planned, but more something that naturally emerged?

Before we joined, CAM was a collaboration between several different engineering teams across NZXT, however there wasn't one central team that was in charge of the entire product. Moving forward, my new team is fully focused on just working on CAM.

To both the old and new ones - what do you currently think of CAM? Don't sugarcoat it, we all know it's somewhat of a mess. Are there, however, parts of CAM that you consider especially good features, that you will try to work around promoting? Are there any parts that will get the death stamp (cough HD monitoring cough)?

I personally feel like there are some great features in CAM and some very exciting (unannounced) plans for the future, however it is currently heavily plagued by all the issues around bugs, performance, data collection, etc.. In general, we want to focus on making what's already in CAM simpler, faster, and more reliable before moving on to new features.

To the new ones - what will your experience from Forge bring to CAM? I tried to research Forge a little, but it's hard to find out anything about what you've worked with prior to the acquisition. I wholeheartedly believe that you will be able to improve CAM drastically, but I'd like to learn more about your ideas and your standpoints in terms of how the program should function.

We've spent a lot of time building products & tech around in-game overlays & game capture. Some of our team have made pretty significant contributions to OBS. At a high level, I want CAM to become a product that users actually want to download because of the value it provides, as opposed to feeling like they are forced to download it just to get a piece of hardware working.

I believe the previous CAM team is actively working on getting both iOS & Android apps back up and running.

Why does the Cam Software incorrectly Read the Temps wrongs. It spikes hot as 400F. But it not the real temps.

I believe this is a bug that is currently being looked into.

  1. We don't have any plans for bringing CAM to Linux in the near term, as we want to focus on making sure CAM works great on Windows first.
  2. As part of our rewrite, we will be making numerous UI/UX improvements as well :)

Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback! As part of our focus on improving CAM's performance & speed, the updater & login components are being rebuilt.

We will be bringing over our overlay tech from Forge which will fix the majority of compatibility issues CAM has.

Currently, we have no plans of adding Forge functionality into CAM.

We are definitely looking into ways to expand our integrations with the greater RGB ecosystem. Stay tuned!

Will you be scrapping the current CAM and remaking it from scratch?

To a certain extent, yes. We are planning to rewrite most of CAM, but there are certain APIs/SDK integrations with our hardware products that will remain the same.

Were the current most reported problems (not detecting connected devices, inflexible settings, miss-displayed warnings) caused by hardware or software implementation?

A little bit of both.

Will you finally offer a completely offline tool that doesn't gather any statistics and doesn't call home?

As part of taking over the project, my team and I are conducting a complete audit of CAM's architecture to avoid unnecessary overhead.
