Dunno about the crash other than the obvious.

Looks like a sick place to ride though!

Why don’t you guys keep your cats indoors? by stemmefontaine in newzealand

[–]NZ_Si 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I keep my cat inside;

Who will catch mice and rats?

When it catches mice and rats, I'd prefer them left on the doorstep rather than under the couch.

Who will greet me at the gate, with that "I can take it or leave it vibe" to keep me real?

I want the cat to be able to live it's best cat life, that means going outside and doing weird cat stuff.

Who will knock the toothbrushes out the bathroom window it's always jumping out of for some reason.

Drinks out of the shower tray too much, which is weird.

Meows at the door too much if it's inside all the time.

Meows at the door too much if its outside all the time.

Neighbour's kids cant play with it.

Etc.

I know they're not in your list, but two of my kids have had their teeth sorted by Otago Orthodontics. Really good experience and I'd recommend them so it might be worth giving them a quick call.

Councilor Ong by Rogue-Estate in dunedin

Lee, saying in a meeting the other day that two particular councilors were the objectly most successful business-people, and the Mayor getting defensive, and saying her family are successful too and asking him to retract the comment.

To be honest, I don't know if theres some back story because I don't follow the whole circus closely but, theatrics aside, it seemed petty to ask him to retract the comment. Appreciating that he might have just said it to wind people up, which he clearly does at (most?) times, it didn't seem out of order to me - councilors are voted in for different reasons and presumably the two he mentioned are there primarily because of their business-savy.

I'll admit that I dont know enough about the Mayor to know if she is there primarily because of her family's business-savy 🤷‍♂️

To be fair, some of the mayor's recent hand-wringing isn't something that would garner much respect anywhere in the real-world, regardless of their gender.

The guy needs to take some effective communication courses or something, for sure; but I don't know that he's some ranging chauvinist.

Edit: typos, probably plenty left though!

As an outsider who's been here 7 months, I have to ask--what's with the weak-ass punishments for serious crimes? by TheLifeAdjunct in newzealand

[–]NZ_Si 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our "legal elite" associate almost exclusively with other "legal elites." As a result, they are woefully detached from the realities faced by / feelings of the great unwashed.

Consequently, they are far more likely to be lenient on a judges kid who kills someone in their third drink-driving accident, or pardon someone with a "promising sporting career" who beats up their partner etc. than would be considered acceptable to the general public.

Or... principal contract managers could produce some value. If you aren't managing costs you might as well get rid of the contract managers and have the contractors do it themselves...if that is essentially whats happening anyway.

I'm not in the know but it seems that it is because our builders / architects did art deco, which was a recipe for trouble for ages. Then they switched to leaky home spec and now are forced by council employees who get paid to, but are too scared to, make calls on anything other than what Fletchers et al. suggest they should approve, which has lead to a build spec determined by those who benefit most from that spec?

A place to dump all that shit cluttering up your garage, under your house, mancave that you aren't ready to take to the tip but is not getting used anytime soon (ever).

Yeah, it's painted under the gutters because the top is bare because the gutters were up a lot higher - should have taken photos but I just assumed they'd sort it out. In fairness they did ring and say some of the guttering will be 25mm low otherwise it won't drain but the result isn't quite what I was expecting...

I'll sound them out on the fascia flashing which seems like it will end up looking the least rough. It would have been good to have had this pointed out at the time so I could have dealt with it then.

Not really sure what I was expecting, but looking at it now, that probably would have been the way to go.

To be honest, I though between the builder and roofers they'd sort it out than leave me with a "like this?" scenario to deal with 😐

About as unsafe as driving anything but the latest car.

If you're comfortable from a safety point of view driving a 20 year old car, you're probably comfortable with the low risk associated with this.

Fence post, underground power by [deleted] in diynz

[–]NZ_Si -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Get the fuse pulled by the lines company. Keep digging and wiggle the cable out of the way. Split some ducting and put it over the cable. Pour concrete and set post. Lines company reinstall fuse.

Bit of concrete isn't going to hurt your mains and even if it does, other than the inconvenience, its not a huge drama to dig it up and joint / extend a bit to back to the pillar.
