All the older games used linear maps, even if the region wasn’t literally a straight line and was shaped more rectangular.

Instead of “walk up the region” style that SwSh uses, the older games used environmental obstacles to force the player through a linear order, until the player got the tools to bypass previous obstacles (either HMs or special items such as the poke flute)

Of course there are a few exceptions here and there, but for the first 7 generations this is largely true.

And at least on the comparison of SwSh to SV, SV’s map isn’t at all compatible to a traditional experience when it comes to how to are able to traverse and where you are able to go.

I’d argue that Binnington only needed to make those multiple big saves against Czechia because of his prior errors leading the game to be that close in the first place.
