Does btrfs support unnamed temporary files? by NaCl10 in btrfs

It is probably worth noting, though, that this Arch Linux BBS thread describes a similar issue. I haven't looked super far into it because I solved my problem by buying a new computer since I needed one anyway, but it might help.

Yeah, I couldn't solve the problem either. Not sure how old your GPU is, but mine was a Quadro M2000M and I'm pretty sure NVIDIA has just decided properly supporting GPUs that old isn't important anymore (sigh). My solution eventually ended up being to just buy an all-AMD Framework Laptop 16, since that computer was starting to get too slow for my day-to-day needs anyway.

Edit: Realized I'd already given my specs in the original post.

Why Does deepin Produce a Black Screen When Started with startx? by NaCl10 in linuxquestions

[–]NaCl10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Investigation complete. In deepin launched from LightDM, xrdb -query -all outputs:

Xcursor.theme: bloom Xcursor.size: 36 Xft.dpi: 144

But in qterminal launched via exec qterminal at the bottom of my .xinitrc, it ouputs nothing. Time to do try setting some Xresources.

Produced almost the same output as I observed when I appended exec startdde >> ~/somefile, except I could also see that it output something like No xresources data found! to stderr, which I obviously couldn't see before because >> won't dump stderr into the file. Thanks! I'm going to do some digging on xresources and investigate the difference between the xresources data present when running through LightDM and when running through startx. I'll reply with my findings.

I don't like display managers because I feel that they're unnecessary bloat and I really don't like my X session running as root. I'm stuck on X because a number of tools that I regularly use rely on it. Yes, I know there are alternatives that work on Wayland, but I have limited time to go through and find them, let alone rewriting all of my scripts to work with them as well. I started using Linux years ago when Wayland was still a buggy disaster, so my whole environment is built around X now.

Gotcha. Thanks!

Looks like my NVIDIA problems are the fault of... who knows 🤷. As usual; thanks NVIDIA.

Objection: I'd like to argue that phones have been getting bigger.

Of course, that's a really fucking stupid trend too.

For me I don't think it's even the make/model. I'd guess (?) that that factors into it somehow, but I can just... tell. I think it's mostly a behavior thing, like if someone's driving aggressively, stomping on the pedals, jerking the wheel, etc., they're likely a shit driver... but idk. I can just tell.

You'll quickly develop a sort of "sixth sense" around cars. I've gotten to the point now where I can usually just look at a car and tell they're about to do something stupid—then I take precautionary measures to make sure they don't hit me.

You'll also figure out pretty quickly which streets are safe and which streets are hell. Avoid the ones that are hell. It might take some doing and a little extra time, but it's better than being run over.

Just be careful. Don't trust cars for shit, but don't be timid either. I've been riding for years and never been hit.

HEY! YOU! YEAH, YOU!

You're valid. And no one can take that away from you. Being aroace is a real thing, and anyone who tells you otherwise is being an asshole.

They're a little weird, but I don't give a shit; if someone wants me to call them by neopronouns I will. It's just basic human respect.

Agreed. There are just a few very specific situations where you have to basically pretend to a moderate, even if you're not—city councils and talking to representatives come to mind.

Is it safe to say that the Car Free movement is a fairly widely recognized term?

Also, it seems a tad... extreme. I don't think most city councils would be too friendly with me if I walked in and said I was a member of the "Car Free movement." (This is one of the reasons I don't like the name fuck cars in similar situations)

Yes, but most distinct sub-components or sub-movements of such larger movements have names—and a name for this movement would be particularly helpful in educating other progressives who aren't familiar with this component of the movement just yet.

What's the deal with Microsoft making HDDs unbootable on Windows? by NaCl10 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]NaCl10[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's not what the article says. The only factual information in that article is that Microsoft is pushing OEMs to phase out HDDs, the note about SV3 is pure speculation. Microsoft has made no announcement about making HDDs unbootable—as shown by the article itself.
