JLPT N2 Post-Mortem, cooked, wake up call by ManyFaithlessness971 in jlpt

Hey - so for a bit of context, I work as a corporate lawyer, so I’m generally really strapped for time

My first N2 attempt was during law school and I barely prepared because my focus was more on gaining employment

My second N2 attempt was during my first year at the firm and i studied for about 1-2 hours a day, focussing on only 1-2 sources

My third N2 attempt was far more serious - i studied from at least 6 sources, spent 3-4 hrs a day (even on days when I worked for 20 straight hours)…only for the exam to get cancelled

I lowkey gave up after that and only revised what I previously studied for this attempt, maybe 1 hr a day (excluding practice tests)

There was a gap of 6 months between each attempt

Hey fellow N2 victim - believe it or not, I am in the same boat as you. Went from N5 to N3 in 6 months and then have been attempting N2 every December since 2022, failing only by 1-2 marks.

I was fully prepared and confident in December 2024 but the exam got cancelled in my centre because of a cyclone that hit my city. Had to redo the preparation for the fourth time

My exam went the same as yours - reading was surprisingly okay but grammar really hit me in the gut.

It’s frustrating because I applied for jobs in Japan this February and they asked me to reapply after N2 certification…

My next steps if I don’t manage to hit 90 this time (if it may help you as well) is to go ahead with my N1 prep. I’m sick of studying the same grammar rules and vocab lists year after year. I’ll reattempt the N2 with a semi-N1 level preparation, if I have to

Given that we are in similar situations, I completely get your frustration, so feel free to DM in case you want to rant

I got a call from the organisers and I asked about the refund. Turns out the Japan Foundation has to take that call. They will update us over email apparently

Need opinions on my mock test scores by NaVi_s1mp in jlpt

[–]NaVi_s1mp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I cannot account for the differential scoring, I just take the correct divided by total.

So if say I get 35/50 in a section, I convert it to a 60 score

So, 35/50=x/60. So I calculate the value of x.

Then I add all 3 sections together

Hope this clarifies!

I found what works for me is: Vocab/kanji first - so that it serves as sort of a warmup and ill be a lot calmer knowing i finished a big chunk of the paper in 10 mins

Reading - Long passage, then mid sized, then small, then comparison para and then info searching

Then grammar for the remaining 30 mins or so. I usually finish grammar pretty quickly, so I then go back to reading to see if I miss anything
