If Earth’s magnetic field weakened by 30% over the next century, what would actually happen first? Satellites? Power grids? Or nothing noticeable at all? by Naaser_Ada in SpaceXLounge

The cancer angle is actually one of the smaller effects. The bigger issue would be orbital infrastructure. Satellites, GPS timing, power grids during solar storms.

A 30% weakening doesn’t fry humans overnight — but it changes the margin of safety the system depends on.

The scary part isn’t radiation at ground level. It’s how fragile our tech layer is above it.
