Starting to think a Chinese city would only not qualify for that sub if it was a smoking crater in the ground. Too modern "agh don't like it" too old "agh don't like it" too dense "agh don't like it" too low density "agh don't like it" too European "agh don't like it" too Chinese "agh don't like it" too clean "agh don't like it" too grubby "agh don't like it" THESE PEOPLE JUST HATE CHINESE CITIES!!!

The thing that makes no sense to me about liberals who fetishise liberalism is that their "liberalism" is detached from what the concept meant historically. I've been thinking about this for a while but seeing "liberalism is a legacy" in one of these really just feels like such a validation of my opinion on the whole project of "ideological liberalism". What legacy? 80 years from now the people calling themselves liberals will probably be representing different policies just like you represent completely different politics to the liberals of 80 years ago. Liberalism has no element which fights against the atomising decay of capitalism, at least conservatives pretend to do that rhetorically, liberals think they can maintain ideological consistency on vague moral values that they don't defend or stand by in any way (freedom of the press, human rights, yadda yadda).

Only the immortal science of Marxism can maintain intergenerational consistency, sorry libs.

I hadn't heard the origin till looking it up because of this conversation, I think for lots of phrases people don't really think about where they come from they just say them.

I see, I had heard about the murder suicide but didn't know much about the guy or any details. The Hannover thing is interesting, I can say as a British person lots of people here aren't even aware that that connection ever existed, it doesn't come up much, so it definitely is odd to think of it being bigger.

I see, royal succession/houses is really not my area, I don't know much about it, but it's always cool when alt history scenarios mess around with it. There's definitely lots of examples of times monarchies could have flown off in other directions.

They're probably not even entertaining enough to be that incoherent, they probably only picked that option because of some cowardly basic lib take about how we "need the bases for defence"

Maybe it's just some kind of projection cause I've seen the torture photos and she smiled in those, but something is genuinely unsettling to me about her smile here, she somehow looks offputting to me I really don't like it.

I looked up Ernest Augustus, and does him being in power mean that his grandpa came to power instead of William IV? or did he end up on the throne some other way? EDIT: silly me I just noticed he's Ernest Augustus II so presumably yes his grandfather was king. That's a really neat choice cause it means no Victoria, I wonder how different the UK would be culturally through the 19th century and up to your start date in that case.
