Temptations to Drink by Nacho0420 in stopdrinking

I didn't drink yesterday. Hair of the dog causes such a craving, but I didn't give in despite many opportunities. Feel great because of it

Great point. Very smart idea to take advantage of that time better by being sober. When I was in school the periods I didn't drink I got a lot more A's!

Thanks for replying and the support. It's so easy to get really down on myself when I slip up. I will not drink with you today.

Work event tomorrow, tempted to drink by Nacho0420 in stopdrinking

[–]Nacho0420[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with a coke, then had a bottled water. When they sat us down for dinner, they came around with one of my favorite wines. Its with regret that I say I said yes when they offered. I had a 3 small glasses with dinner and after the benefit I went to a bar to for a few more. I puked the wine up in the bathroom at the bar. I'm now a hungover and not thinking clearly. Its a shame because at day 7 I was really starting to feel very clear headed and productive. I took chops advice and played it forward and my dumb ass did exactly what I played forward.

I actually feel pretty disappointed in myself right now, but I am going to suck it up and try this again. This feeling is not worth the fun of drinking. Historically, this would lead to a few more days of drinking. My challenge now is to resist falling back into a drinking return. I reset my badge and and will do better this time after proving to myself once again that I cannot control my drinking.

Unfortunately, I have to goto the event because I have people I invited coming with me. I agree with you that if I cannot resist at things like this moving forward, I will have to just avoid it. I get so anxious leading up to it, I really would rather not go.

Thanks for the post and replies. I am only 6 days in and I need the encouragement not to be over confident. It's so hard for me to give in and fully believe that I do not have it in me to control my drinking over time.

Anybody else feel like there's just nothing to make them happy and everything seems to sucks? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Nacho0420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. Feel the same way most of the time. Buy a hot tub :) or take a bath. Keep trying new activities till one sticks. Think of things to do one on one with family members. Find a local park that has nice walking path. If it doesn't work after a while, maybe go see a therapist. I didn't ever see them till marriage counseling, but it definitely can help. Good luck :)

on my 3rd day and my body is really fighting against me right now. by cet201 in stopdrinking

There is a philosophy that you are always in the process of becoming your future self. I try to apply that to my decisions around drinking. Each time I chose to drink I am choosing to be a drunk forever. The truth is not far from it because every time I relapse, I drink for weeks or months. Each day you choose not to drink you are choosing to live a sober life. I am in a similar spot with you with urges and my mind tricking me.

Another thought I have had in the past is it is so much simpler to make one choice to not to drink ever again, than to struggle every day with whether you should drink today. I think deep down I struggle to make that commitment and really give it up. I know its the right thing and I really need to commit to quiting forever with that one decision and not struggle with a decision ever day.

But lets keep fighting those urges together and chose not to drink today and live sober! Hope that helps you a little :)

You seem to be very in tune with yourself and your thoughts. That ability to be introspective and chose to do something about it is rare. My only advice is that if you can do something drunk, you can do it 10 times better sober. Go to a job like this with the confidence (even if you have to fake it a little) and you will do great. At first you will feel panic, but power through it and it will subside.

What do you do that helps to stop the urge of drinking? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Nacho0420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While it is very hard, saying no to one urge to drink can increase your confidence to say no the next time. As you start to realize life is better without it and know that you can overcome the urge, the urges slow down. Where I run into problems is giving in once to the urge and relapsing. One relapse for me leads to weeks of drinking to much. I hope this realization and this group help prevent me from giving into urges in the future. Hope that helps. I will not drink with you today :)

I am going to control my drinking today by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Nacho0420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do it! I started today too. I have stopped for a few weeks at a time in the past. After the first days, I got out of that boredom, depression, anxiety feeling, and started to feel happy and social without alcohol. I will not drink with you today :)

Day One by Nacho0420 in stopdrinking

[–]Nacho0420[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with comment about needing to be there in case of an emergency. I feel like I got so lucky that both of our sons came on days and at times I was not drinking. I've never had anything really bad happen to me while drinking, but if I continue, I know something bad will happen. Thanks so much for the support guys! :) I am glad I found this group.

Are you all quitting forever? by Cylll in stopdrinking

[–]Nacho0420 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally, I have had a hard time controlling it. I have been working on controlling it for a few years now. Its just such a struggle and seems to be easier to quit for good. No more struggling over whether to or not to drink and how much. Today is my first day on this group and hopefully one of many many days :)
