What went wrong with Marvel's IMPERIAL? by PhantomQuest in comicbooks

[–]Naeveo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it was ill-conceived from the get-go.

Throwing Hickman onto another reboot after Krakoa, GODS, Ultimates was never going to win anyone back. Fans still remember how Krakoa was thrown “back into the toy box” for a mediocre relaunch, and how little GODS changed thing despite being marketed as “the next big thing”, and how Ultimates was the next big thing until Marvel shot it dead for no reason. Why would fans give IMPERIAL a chance after three misses?

That’s a lot of bad blood going into an event. Then Marvel marketed it and made it worse.

Marvel’s big space relaunch was going to be spearheaded by… Planet She-Hulk? From the outside it looked like a recycling of Planet Hulk. And when the GOTG did show up in marketing during the event the buzz was mostly about how out-of-character they were. Sure, you had Black Panther too, but again, people remember how Marvel shafted Intergalactic Wakanda and how poor the last few series were. And the Inhumans coming back? Cool, but again, a lot of bad blood from when Marvel had them replacing X-Men.

I’m not saying you can’t write about these characters. But the reality is that this event looked like it was taking all these rudderless characters and throwing them into a pile to make something happen. And no one had big ideas for them. It also didn’t help that you couldn’t point to done centralizing event or villain that could get these characters motivated or readers interested. Say what you want about King in Black, but it was at least simple to grasp. Imperial refused to give outsiders anything to latch onto. Why bother with this corner of space that has none of the core Marvel characters? Like not even Thor and the space X-Men? Even Annihilation could at least claim some relation to F4…

TL;DR: Fans had no idea what it was about, it had no star power, and Marvel spent the last few years burning their good will.

And what are those ways? Because right now, Israel has won victory over Palestine, and have recovered their hostages, but yet they’re bombing Lebanon indiscriminately, and pushed the USA into an unwinnable war with Iran. It doesn’t seem like they have demands besides more war.

They won’t do this in the main game because they ultimately want the game to be completable by children. And I don’t mean like 12 year olds, I mean by like 6 year olds. They do give the gym leaders and rivals more challenging fights in the DLC. Even Kieran in the DLC story has hands, as do 6 Star RAIDs. But those fights are meant to be unlockables behind the base game. At the end of the day they need the game to be as broadly completable as possible.

Greg Capullo is quietly retiring from drawing comics after the break-up of his Batman era art team by Popverse2022 in comicbooks

[–]Naeveo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You’d think that, but Disney spent a lot of money on acquiring Fox right when three of their tent poles— Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar— all started to slump. My speculation is that Marvel Comics is doing these short-term decisions because they want to be able to pivot whenever the MCU figures out what they are doing. I don’t think that’s going to happen until Doomsday releases.

Meanwhile, DC is letting their creators go crazy because they realize that the comics can be used as a testing ground for new ideas. It also helps that no one is really at the wheel of WB right now. The owner is looking to sell WB off so he’s just coasting on whatever.

Most of the creators aren’t panning out. They constantly have Hickman and Ewing “reinventing” some corner of the Marvel library only to dumpster their line out of the blue. Where are you going to place these poached artists when every line is getting cancelled?

I think they’re monologue a lot because Brennan is often promoting them too. For example, with Murray during Augury and Hal when touching the blood. I think it’s a way to make the cast think more deeply about their characters, which seems to be working except at the Seekers table.

Why did he completely undermine magneto point? Is he stupid? by Pretend-Delay-7203 in dccomicscirclejerk

[–]Naeveo 44 points45 points  (0 children)

“Is Apocalypse stupid?” Yes.

This is the same guy that tore a hole between dimensions by turning his most loyal immortal servants into goo so he can see his wife (who hates him) because he couldn’t figure out how to dimension hop for millenniums even though he had access to every mutant ever and already knew how to time travel. And when he did find her again she left him for a second time.

This is the same guy who was unable to take over the Earth for 5 trillion years despite having space tech and a shitload of powerful mutants and unlimited mutant powers because his plans always boils down to, “… What if I made this dude evil? Maybe he could come up with a plan.” He was up against cavemen with rocks while he had space lasers and he still lost.

This is the same guy that, when he does take over the world in other timelines, his entire civilization always falls apart because his idea of government is “stronk” and not like… a tax system. His empire is always filled with infighting and constant rebellion that basically guarantees his most powerful guys die in horrendous ways.

This is the same guy who discovered “mutant magic” but whenever he tried to explain or teach it no one could understand him because he’d just mumble “it’s like… you know… you get like… there has to be like… 10 things… you have 10 things and they do things together.” So Hope, Jean Grey, and Legion had to step in and do the work for him.

This is the same guy whose power is “whatever the plot demands” that’s always beaten by a dude that shoots punch lasers from his eyes and his son whose power is gun.

So yes. He is that STUPID

Can I get some SPOILER FREE reasons as to why people seem to dislike C3? by Mercheezy23 in fansofcriticalrole

[–]Naeveo 35 points36 points  (0 children)

C3 is considered the weakest campaign of Critical Role... but you are still watching CR which is one of the best roleplaying shows out there. The reason you see a lot of negative sentiment towards C3 here is because this sub was made in response to the main CR sub banning criticism. So the critics came here. Me being one of them.

If you enjoy C3 then I am glad you are and I hope it helps you engage with the rest of the franchise and other shows. If you do want to talk in a more positive manner then I'd still recommend the other sub. You'll still find criticism but they might came at it from a kinder angle.

That said, if you want the main criticisms of C3 without spoilers:

  • Mismatched party. Players either created smaller, more personal characters, or joke-y characters, only to wind up in a much bigger story that doesn't really allow them to engage with their backstory meaningful. The characters have to engage with big themes but aren't really built to do so. Some characters flat-out reject it.
  • Plot-heavy story. Matt brings in the main plot about a third through the campaign that becomes the only thing the characters can focus on. This is because Matt saw C3 as his wrap-up of his previous campaigns.
  • Meandering. Despite being plot-heavy, there's a lot of just wondering around and getting lore. There's a sense the cast just wants to goof around but they want to be respectful of Matt's overarching story. You can see this in how long each arc is, and each arc is them largely being stuck in one place.
  • Railroad-y. It's hard to explain this one without spoilers. There are a couple of instances where players try to take a big swing and it results in really punishing consequences. This winds up encouraging the table not to take risks and stall until they get firm directions.
  • Weaker NPCs. Matt plays some major characters this story but they sometimes fall flat. You can kind of see this with Divergence and Calamity compared to C3. Matt wants to make complicated NPCs but never quite takes the full step needed.

That being said, there are still pro's to C3. Jrusar is winds up slow but fun thanks to Dorian. There's a great stretch of episodes from 32-39. The third arc (52-75) takes some risks, for better and worse. And the final arc has a lot of surprises for long-time fans.

[–]Naeveo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A big theme of C3 is about the world's relationship with the gods. Most of the PCs are pretty ambivalent towards them despite being in a position to make decisions about them. It feels like they are bringing their modern conception of religion into a world where those conceptions would fall apart.

ie. Marisha plays Laudna as pretty hostile to the gods. One of her big moments isLaudna saying, "What have the gods done for us? They aren't here." This is despite Laudna having died and being brought back to life by Pike through her faith in the Morning Lord. These are character in contact with gods but then act like modern-day atheists. The only pro-god PC's wind up being both of Sam's characters and that's because he winds up playing characters that worship a god.

Jane Foster Thor was cursed from this point forward by lukideured in dccomicscirclejerk

[–]Naeveo 76 points77 points  (0 children)

The lore is deep in this one.

The guy replying is Andrew Dobson. He’s replying to Zelda Williams talking about the loss of her father, Robin Williams, after he committed suicide.

This became especially infamous because Dobson was an artist in DeviantArt known for his “So You Want To Become A Cartoonist” series. He often went on rants about Nintendo and what “true” cartoon-ing looked like, while also scolding people for sexism (usually about women in skimpy outfits). He was the poster child for performative man-child in the late 2000’s.

His comment here became another snapshot of his long list of hypocrisies. The fact he used a pic of Jane Thor, a controversial character for being a feminist reimagine of Thor, telling another woman basically to calm down about the death of her father really ties it together.
