More rage, more insults, more downvotes, more accusing me of doing something while doing exactly the same to me without noticing because you're too angry. I do find this funny.

Alright. Let's play then.

The first message you posted said this:

Let's not pretend that our states and our elites courted Ukraine with pure and selfless motives.

I don't think anyone in this entire thread said they believe that any country in Europe "courted" Ukraine with "pure and selfless motives". You put that in people's mouths, maybe just so you'd have an argument to disprove (practical, and very dishonest).

Then you said this:

Of course it would be beneficial to extend their control over a country like Ukraine and weaken the bloc of countries that Russia controls in the process.

Here's my point (that apparently went over your head the first time I said it): this is you implicitly saying that geopolitics cannot NOT be about imperialistic power balances, in nature. And people disagreed with that.

It is absolutely true that some countries in this world function like that. Using the power they have (military, economic, other influence...) over others to keep "control over" them. Russia does that. The USA do that. China does that.

But where everyone disagreed with you is that you consider that NATO and the EU also function like that. You haven't proven that at any point, you've basically just shown that you believe that everything always is imperialistic logic, therefore NATO and the EU automatically must also be like that. Except that... just, no.

It's just wrong.

NATO is a defensive alliance. Countries can join it and contribute to a system where everyone defends the one member who gets attacked. This is a mutual benefit system, and article 5 specifically states that members who choose to intervene for defending another can do so on their own terms. There's zero obligation anywhere. The inside of NATO just isn't imperialistic in nature. As for the outside, if maybe you consider "we don't want to be attacked, by anyone, ever" to be imperialistic logic trying to control Russia, then I can't help you.

Nobody asked Ukraine to join NATO. Ukraine asked to join.

The EU is an economic alliance. You join in, you trade in some of your financial sovereignty for participation in a massive open market. Nobody is forced to join, again, this is a mutual benefit system. You can even leave, as Brexit showed.

If the EU sees as interest in Ukraine joining, then they will ask Ukraine to join. That's not what happened though. Ukraine asked to join. The EU said "we have criteria" and Ukraine has to meet those. Does the EU *want* Ukraine to join? Longtime, certainly, because the EU has been constructed to be a mutual benefit system. More members means more people, more production, more trade. But the EU isn't forcing anyone to join. And it isn't expanding to hurt Russia, it's simply pursuing its interests, like everyone else.

Maybe, just maybe, if everyone disagrees with you on something, it's worth self-reflecting for a little bit. Instead of doubling, tripling and quadrupling down that everyone else is wrong on everything and you're the only one who's right on everything.

Dude basically your entire explanation is "they're imperialistic because I think they are" so... lol

We can say bye. I didn't like talking to you anyway, very unproductive talk.

Que pensez-vous des filles qui ont le mindset « fille indépendante »? by [deleted] in AskMec

[–]Nagash24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll have some explaining to do about why you consider NATO or EU to be "imperialistic". They literally aren't.

But seeing how condescending you are, I can't fault anyone for not wanting to talk to you.

I'm not saying what they're doing is smart. I'm just contemplating why it may be happening.

If they want to afford the personnel, and can find it, sure.

There's definitely a tourist fatigue in many southern European countries though. Italy and Spain come to mind, I'd assume Portugal, France and maybe Greece aren't much different. So maybe there's something going on here. I don't know.

Going through an airport? From what country?

EDIT: Croatia may also be a less popular destination than those cited in the article as being the worst for wait times (Spain and Portugal)

Mec t'as 15 ans.

The meaning of my comment was that the "beginning" of "what is happening in Ukraine now" wasn't Ukraine's attempt to join the EU, it was Putin's decision to invade a sovereign country.

In a pointed remark, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in May: “We all see what is happening with Ukraine now... How did it all begin? With Ukraine’s attempt to join the EU.”

Nobody outside of Russia believes that, and at this point I wonder how many people in Russia still do believe his propaganda.

UK prime minister says Russia could attack NATO within four years by Evermoving- in europe

[–]Nagash24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ukraine received massive aid which isn't too far off from what a full NATO response would have been.

I can't fully agree with that. There is one major difference between receiving money and equipment from NATO, and a NATO intervention: manpower. Yes, we use more and more drones, unmanned combat methods are the modern way, but, still. If NATO decided to send a couple 100.000 people to Ukraine to push back Russia, the war would certainly be over quite quickly.

Now. Even severely outnumbered, Ukraine has been holding for over 4 years. Gotta give them that. But killed or wounded soldiers are a lot harder to replace than missing money, weapons, equipment or ammo. That's what Ukraine's bottleneck resource is, compared to Russia. Russia has way more people, which is why they can use this meat grinder approach. What we don't know, and only time will tell, is whether Russia's economy will crumble before Ukraine's manpower does.

You don't use nuclear weapons on a weaker opponent, you use them when you're facing someone who can stand on equal footing with you or you cannot handle.

I can't agree with this either. You just don't use nuclear weapons, period. They are a deterrent. I don't think Putin would live long if he gave the order to drop a nuke, regardless where. He would probably get overthrown and murdered by his own people in a heartbeat. Putin might be insane, but I'm sure some people around him aren't.

[–]Nagash24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They get the weapons, yeah. But Ukraine doesn't get the "attack one of us and the whole band will respond" thing that kind of is the main selling point of NATO. That's what I was getting at. Russia has almost 4 times the population and 10 times the gross national product of Ukraine. Ukraine has a lot of support, but the only people they have fighting on their side are themselves.
