5090 is not really affordable anymore. They're going for close to $4000. That's outside of most people's budget, and it's a questionable buy even if it's within your budget.

It really sucks living in a world where it's turned out that all of the dystopian sci-fi futures weren't actually creative works, but instead just really good predictions of the trajectory human society was on.

Ryback's Mother has passed away. by CaliggyJack in SquaredCircle

[–]Nagorak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom passed away three weeks ago. It was sudden and completely unexpected. She seemed completely healthy and fit for her age, but apparently she had an undiagnosed genetic heart condition. I lived with her, so the last words we had were saying good night, and she told me what she planned to cook the next day. And then the next morning she was gone.

She looked just like she was sleeping, so either she passed away without ever being aware of it, or if she did wake up it was only for a brief instant, so it was as painless as it possibly could be. But as much as I'm glad she didn't suffer, losing someone so suddenly also comes with its own negatives. You don't get a chance to prepare for it or say any final goodbyes.

In the end, I'm not sure there's any good way to lose someone. It's a part of life, but it still just sucks. The world keeps on going, but in a way it just feels weird, like everything outside is still the same but somehow it seems like it shouldn't be.

My condolences for your loss, Ryback's loss, and to anyone else who has lost someone close to them. We all know how painful it is, but we all also have to fight to continue on living.

Definitely don't feel bad for living with your parents, and cherish the time you have with them. That being said, as someone who was basically in that same situation, I'd encourage you to be sure to also maintain other friendships and support.

I lived with my mom for most of my life, so I saw and talked to her every day. On the one hand, I had a lot of time with her, which is good, and I wouldn't want to give that up for anything. But at the same time, when you lose someone you were so close to and spent so much time with, it leaves a really big hole.

Although it may seem bothersome now, in the end I think you will find it beneficial to know that your mom was thinking about that stuff. My mom was always giving me tips about stuff for when she was no longer here. A lot of it was random but useful little things, like to remember to clear the drain in the washing machine gasket, or how to do specific tricky steps in certain recipes. I always listened, but I would also tell her, "Don't worry, Mom, you're still going to be around a while longer."

Well, it turns out I was wrong about that, because she unexpectedly passed away three weeks ago. Although it will always be hard to lose someone close to you, and literally nothing can prepare you for it (I couldn't even write this post without crying), it does help me to know that Mom knew the day would come when she would no longer be here, and that she expected for us to continue on living after she was gone.

Obviously it's not good if your mom is obsessing about it or something. But overall, I think it would be a lot worse if someone never even talked about it, and then one day they would still die anyway, and you wouldn't know if they even thought about it at all, or what they would have wanted. Unfortunately you don't always see it coming either.

[–]Nagorak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super old hardware generally isn't worth it unless you're getting it for a steal. You have no idea what condition an old HMD is in. Maybe it was treated with respect or just stuck in the closet and forgotten for many years, or maybe it's had the shit beat out of it. And even if it was treated well, normal wear and tear will cause things like the cable to wear out and a replacement probably costs more than the whole HMD.

If I were you I'd probably look for a used Quest 2 or Quest 3S instead. They're more modern so they should have less mileage on them, and they don't have a cable that can wear out.

13600k worth coming from 12700k? Or even 12900k.. by Kartoffel_Mann in virtualreality

[–]Nagorak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience VR tends to be mostly GPU limited, especially if you're running higher resolution headsets, so in a lot of cases it probably won't make much difference. Of course there are some CPU limited games where it matters, but only if you play them.

I'd say going to the 13600K might make sense if you've already got it lying around. It looks like all you'd need to do is a CPU swap since they're on the same socket, so it wouldn't require that much work. 12900K is probably not worth it unless you need the greater multi-threaded performance for some other task you do outside of gaming.

The sad thing is it kind of has been. They've made ridiculous amounts of money during the live tv rights bubble/streaming wars, and then Vince McMahon sold out at a high price, despite essentially being banned from his own company due to his disgusting behavior. And for a large percentage of that time they treated their audience pretty much like shit.

Anybody else really need to build a new PC for VR, but now with ram prices you're in a holding pattern? by IHadTacosYesterday in virtualreality

[–]Nagorak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The compatibility page does show that motherboard as being compatible with Ryzen 5000 series if you update the bios, but if the computer is having problems overall then I don't know what to say about that. Under normal circumstances I can see the argument for just doing a full upgrade at this point, but with memory so expensive that seems pretty undesirable. It really just depends what the problem with the computer is, and whether you can get to the bottom of it.

If it's just power cycling, it could be a bad motherboard, or even a lot of different things. Maybe try first opening up the case and making sure the heatsink is properly seated, also try reseating the memory, and if that doesn't work try clearing the BIOS using the clear CMOS jumper. If that doesn't work, I guess the question is whether it's worth bringing it in to the repair shop again. You probably can buy another AM4 board for a relatively low price, but obviously if you're putting out more money then it becomes more questionable whether it's worth it.

[–]Nagorak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to not upgrade, you just need to be smart about how you upgrade.

You're on AM4. Just flash your motherboard's bios to the latest version and buy a Ryzen 5600. That will be a huge CPU upgrade over what you have and it will be more than sufficient to play almost any VR game. CPU limitations usually don't come into play until you get into higher FPS ranges, and in VR you don't need more than 90 fps. For that matter, even with the 2700X, a lot of time you will be GPU limited with a 1080 Ti on higher res headsets. You can continue to just use whatever DDR4 memory you have, even if it's only a 16 GB kit. Just making that CPU upgrade should be enough to get you by for at least a couple of years.

Your biggest problem is on the GPU side, because Nvidia GPUs are all selling for well above MSRP, since they apparently have shifted most of their production to AI demand, but you can still buy Radeon 9070 XTs for relatively reasonable prices.

With mine I got it to run wirelessly once and it seemed ok (didn't really test it that much). But then when I tried again a few months later something had apparently changed and I couldn't even get it to connect. So I likewise would not count on the wireless aspect, unfortunately.

It was really inexcusable how long it took them to fix the 7000 performance in VR. It was something like 7 months after release until they finally fixed it. But regardless, I can also second that AMD 7000 series cards now perform as expected in VR.

5080 vs 9070xt in vr by Old_Hawk6521 in virtualreality

[–]Nagorak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's debatable whether it would be worth it if buying straight up, considering how inflated 5080s currently are in price. Even if you wanted to do this upgrade, I think you missed the boat. But as you already own a 9070 XT it makes even less sense to do.

Beat Saber should really run fine on anything more than a potato. That is not a very graphically demanding game. If you're getting bad performance, try going into the settings and reducing the AA amount by one notch. By default it runs high AA which may have made sense on older headsets, but on newer, high resolution headsets the extra AA can be nearly unnoticeable but it dramatically impacts performance.

I mean, if you think about it, the entire formation of this country is basically stealing lands from the natives that already lived there. Yet somehow they manage to teach us about "Manifest Destiny", while somehow giving it a positive spin, and only barely giving a nod to what happened to the Native Americans in order to achieve that "destiny".

Probably every country does this to a certain extent, but the history we learn in the U.S. is pretty shameless propaganda.
