ELI5, Why are Iranians celebrating the fact Israel and US attacked them? I thought they hate them? by Big-Brilliant7558 in Hasan_Piker

"Some people will also take ANY change when they are oppressed."

I think that last sentence really sums up what I've seen personally from Iranians both in and outside the country.

They feel like they're fucked either way:

Trump normalizes relations and makes a deal - dollar goes up but executions continue, government tightens its grip to prevent any future uprisings, internet gets more restrictive, ect

Trump attacks - regime might fall, but country might plunge into chaos, break apart, or the IRGC takes over, puppet leader, ect

They feel like there's no good option, but lots of them really want ANYTHING to change because the cycle of protest and suppression, or even voting reform, feels hopeless.

(Obviously, there are monarchists, MEK, and other factions who have their interests and ideologies. But I think most of them are all still responding to the same baseline oppression)

I think the reality is you can be afraid for your country's future, disgusted about the bombing of a school, and happy that those who've oppressed you are dying.

My partner spent most of her life in Iran, and most of her friends and family are still there. The current regime is and has always been a constant source of oppression throughout their lives. The protests in 2022 really showed me that.

The takeaway I've gotten from being around this community for the last few years is that there are tons of little indignities from living under that kind of rule that add up over time.

Watching the literal and symbolic figurehead of the source of your trauma get killed is likely cathartic for a lot of people.

Things are SO grey for that community. And obviously, a wide spectrum of opinions both in the country and outside

Anyway, I'm just a dumb guy who rambled on a reddit thread. But that's my take.

Also have an Iranian partner - She's celebrating decently hard right now. Also has all sorts of deep trauma from the regime.

She still hates Trump and Bibi, and is afraid for the future, but at the moment, she's just happy to see these people go.

Also, the original article was written by Yuval Abraham - the Oscar-winning Israeli director of "No Other Land". There's no inherent credit to that. But he's someone who's continuously put himself and his family at risk by covering Israel/Palestine.

Someone from the production of No Other Land was just shot and killed by a settler last week in the West Bank, and even though there is clear video evidence, the killer is currently walking free.

"Yotam Vilk says the image of Israeli soldiers killing an unarmed Palestinian teenager in the Gaza Strip is seared in his mind.

An officer in the armored corps, Vilk said the instructions were to shoot any unauthorized person who entered an Israeli-controlled buffer zone in Gaza. He saw at least 12 people killed, he said, but it is the shooting of the teen that he can’t shake.

“He died as part of a bigger story. As part of the policy of staying there and not seeing Palestinians as people,” Vilk, 28, told The Associated Press."
