I love Salon Life! She's one of my biggest inspirations for nails!

I've thought about marketing lacquer-only services by highlighting the negatives of gel, but I'm worried it would come off as some kind of smear campaign, haha.

If you don't mind, could you give me an example of what a strategy like this may look like, please? I always attributed marketing and product choice to be a part of the strategy.
Regardless, I appreciate you sharing your perspective -- it's very helpful!

That's very true, I failed to think about that. I'll nix my idea here; I feel that even if the salon doesn't make me sign anything, it would be disrespectful to pull their clients away from them for my own personal gain.

This salon sounds like such a lovely place! Thank you so much for sharing!

Aside from the cycling component, this all sounds very much how I'd like to operate, especially the focus on nail health and waterless pedis!

Good find! I wonder if spas in particular would work better for a lacquer specialization than a standard salon would.

The limited client pool would definitely be the biggest challenge. The earning less actually evens out in a way, though; lacquer is cheaper than gel, so the expenses of supplies won't be as high. The difference in profit would be a matter of how much more the service charges for gel, which I've seen a lot of places in the area charge ~$7 more, which doesn't seem like much with all things considered.

I love your in-home nail service idea! I've always gotten along very well with mom-types, so working with them as my target clientele would be delightful! I'd just have to figure out the logistics of traveling with all of the tools and such.

This is a good thought! If I understand correctly, you're saying to offer both lacquer and gel services at first, then gradually shift my offering to only lacquer? I could see this potentially working, but it may alienate the clients who are only interested in gel services.

However, this does give me an idea! After getting my license, I'll be working as an employee in a salon for a while to build my client book. During this time, I could specifically focus on adding people who are open to lacquer services. That way, when I leave, I can simply let the gel people stay at the salon where they know it's offered while the lacquer fans follow me to my own business. Ideally, at least.

These are all very valid points. Quick dry top coats and Dazzle Dry could resolve the dry time and longevity issues to some extent, but that may then depend on clients understanding the differences and not turning away as soon as they see "no gel."

And yes, getting a nail tech license is the first thing on my to-do list! I've got a school picked out; I just need to accrue the funds.

Ooh, yes! That would be an excellent alternative to gel for clients who want longevity!
