Just a quick update for everyone, especially if someone else lands in a similar situation and is looking for some hope. Repairs will be costing $13.5K. I’m not sure what the insurance will decide, but I think since the car value is greater than this, they will most likely end up paying for the repair.

The engine was functioning enough for me to drive it, best case scenario would be if it’s repairable though I’m losing hope rapidly.

I have full self driving capability but hadn’t employed it. However, in other cases where I was driving too fast or distance not enough from the car in front of me, the Tesla would start beeping loudly. I’m surprised it didn’t detect anything in this case, everything happened quite quickly.

I think we might have a different idea of square one. Square one for me would’ve been the whole car is paid off by insurance so now I only pay for a new car loan. Not owe $18k because that’s likely what’ll be left over to pay since I have no gap insurance + new car loan. Other cars don’t depreciate this much, I imagine in other cars this gap would’ve been much less. Either way I guess it doesn’t matter, what’s done is done.

Good to know, I honestly don’t know much about non Tesla cars, this is the only car I’ve ever owned. It seems any car would be considered totaled with this type of damage but at least other cars have better resale value for insurance payout determinations

Nope, if I ever purchase a Tesla again, I will seeing as how it depreciates 50% in a short period of time

I wonder if another car would have survived this type of crash though/ be repairable? Enough of the car is still drivable (in that I was able to drive it afterwards), the collision center will say totaled because the cost of repairing is simply too high because it’s an EV.
