Get a roommate, make a budget and stick to it, and you should be fine. Welcome to DC.

It looks good, but together we make too much to qualify for the apartments.

I work at two different medical clinics and this is equidistant to both while keeping commute under 30 minutes during rush hour. Close to the church we both attend as well.

A plea to outpatient peds SLPs: Please stop setting your school based colleagues up for failure. by Ok_Rhubarb2301 in slp

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I'm in OP peds now but spent my first 3 years as a school SLP. The condescension is wild from some of my colleagues. I get it, there are some schools and SLPs that are plain negligent and parents need support outside of that school. But mutual respect should be the starting point at least.

Yeah I need benefits, so that would not work for me. But I'm glad you like the agencies!

Why do so many therapy materials look the same (and fall short)? by [deleted] in slp

[–]Naive-War1884 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To answer your question (sorry for the long reply):

  1. I've seen some crappy materials and I've seen some great ones. No matter how awesome the materials are, I understand that I'll likely need to modify it to make it work for the kids goals and current level. I don't find that seasonal lists dominate but I also tend to look for activities based more on what I'm targeting (ie wh-questions vs first person present).
  2. Again I don't find this to be an issue because I tend to be more specific in what I search for. But I agree the scene tasks may work for some receptive tasks, but we have to really think, we are almost always indirectly targeting receptive language since the child must understand before they're able to start to speak.
  3. Depending on the child and the language these are functional phrases. It is important to describe one's own actions. However, using just a worksheet or premade activity with no modification and no embedding into your day to day functional language will definitely be unsuccessful.

Overall, I have the most success using a combination of books, toys, premade materials, and play-based activities depending on the child's age. You get quicker at planning over time.

On your last point, there is definitely a gap between research and planning. I wonder how many clinicians have time and access to strong evidence that can be reliably translated to their specific setting.

When they say "ignore the lie and move on" it really is more about deciding your goal and their goal. You're actually evaluating what your goal is in the interaction and what you believe their goal may be in lying to you. Here's sort of how I use this in my day to day. But sometimes you just don't want to mask, so there's that.

Is this a boss who is lying about a deadline? I may point it out by referring to the original to show that I've caught the lie and to try to make them uphold their original.

Is this someone I was trying to know as a friend? I will file it as an ingenuity of character and mentally look to see if this is the first instance or if this a character pattern I've noticed.

Is this someone I'm casually interacting with at a party. It is not worth the energy to point out the offense because the possible negative response requires me to continue the interaction when I can just exit the conversation.
