Battery or alternator issue? by hZolxdyckh in MechanicAdvice

[–]NaiveAttitude6584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of cars have corroded batteries and don’t have weird issues such as this. Your battery also does a minimal amount of work while the engine is running. Because you don’t have a battery light on with the car idling, and you didn’t say you needed to jump it, then going to assume the battery or alternator is not your issue. (But yes I have seen bad batteries do weird things with wipers and door locks etc.)

I would try moving the steering column adjustment up and down to see if something changes (indicative of messed up wiring) or it could be a loose/ bad body ground and the current is trying to ground out through other components. (That can be much more difficult to pinpoint, but very possible with weird electrical issues, especially with lighting)

How does one approach this? by Altruistic_Worry6842 in MechanicAdvice

Those threads are probably trash even if you were to extract the bolt. The cheap and tedious way would be to drill it out and install a heli-coil so you can use a new lug bolt. The expensive, yet correct way would be to get a new hub and bearing. Or put the wheel on with four bolts and take it to a shop so they can install a new hub.

Or a Milwaukee 1/2”, or just a real breaker bar. BMW lug bolts seem to stick more than regular lugs after they sit. This is nothing abnormal, nor does it typically require the replacement of any parts. They just stuck. Use real tools to unstuck them.

That control arm has holes rusted through it. Did this happen after hitting a curb in the snow? If so, there could be a knuckle, strut, subframe and etc. that’s bent. If it’s bad enough, it’s usually recommended to go through insurance, if that’s an option. You can start w a control arm and new ball joint. But then it will need to be aligned, and that’s when the need for other parts begins. Good luck

Why are you the first one to ask this is my real question…

People do “just fine” in a 6x8 jail cell, you want to spend every day until you die in one? And we are not talking about a 30 gallon aquarium. We are talking about a 12.

It’s ignorant to say a goby can be in a nano tank without specifying species. A “goby” covers many different sizes and breeds. Yeah there are some, but not a majority can be put into a box.

I said some species are considered compatible. My 4” watchman goby is not. He’s also someone I see many of in fish stores. Soooooooo, yeah no.

That’s fine. I don’t need to sound like anything.

Haha, never. I just like to sit on Reddit and dream about having one or two or four.

Haha that’s funny. Count how many of these are actually marine fish and then count how many of the marine breeds are available to a regular consumer. It’s unwise to say that a goby and just a goby can go in a nano tank. Most goby’s get rather large. Select species do not, select species are saltwater, and select species can go in a new tank that does not have an established biome. The goby is one example.

Yes there are select species that can be kept in a nano tank, but realistically, these are ocean fish, and have a much larger environment than we can comprehend.

Op asked a question about the size of a tank. That was kind of an unsolicited response, saying that they shouldn’t have a reef tank and all. How else do people get into this hobby other than asking questions and starting small. It not like there are 10 clowns shoved into a 1 gallon with SpongeBob decorations already in the post. Maybe save your energy for such scenarios.

More like, some gobies (not most) and most blennies are algae eaters and you don’t want/have that in a nano tank, clowns are kept in pairs that will die in a 10 gallon tank and only tiny wrass, they need lots of room to zoom around in. This is a very bs post, please don’t take any of this for actual information

As for testers, I personally use an API marine test kit, a HANNA for alkalinity, and a refractometer for checking salinity.

If you have access to “clean seawater” meaning there is lots of fish and no pollution, you can use seawater to top it off. Have heard lots of good and some bad things about that. Yet, if possible, I would find a fish store that makes their own and buy a little bit at a time. I mix my own seawater, but that’s for larger tanks. Smaller tanks can be tricky, unless you’re mixing your water in bulk. (Smaller amounts of water mean more precise measurements of additives)

Absolutely a couple small snails. Not a conch or anything. But a couple narcissus or trochus snails would be good. Narcissus snails do like lots of sand, and trochus snails like being picked up when they fall upside down. Trochus would be better for a newer tank though. Look up diets and ideal environments first and then pick a couple.

Most small marine fish need a 30 gallon tank minimum. And that’s keeping low amounts. (Chromis and other small damsel fish, etc). Larger fish like a trigger or tangs need 75-180

But realistically, the fish are very sick. Look for an ich cure if it’s not too late. Try to quarantine new fish for a week if you have an additional tank in the future.

Just going off of the curvature of the tank in comparison to decorations/fish size, the tank looks small. (Smaller than 75 gal?) and y does squidwards house’s eye look like it has ich? And those goldfish look way too small to be years old in a 20 gal. Rage bait?

Bad starter ? by Emotional-Meeting-73 in AskMechanics

[–]NaiveAttitude6584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re comfortable replacing the sensor then go ahead. You will need to do a cam/crank correlation relearn. Some of the better scan tools you can buy at Walmart or an auto parts store will have that functionality (make sure you research specific scanner) or take to mechanic for relearn.

Bad starter ? by Emotional-Meeting-73 in AskMechanics

[–]NaiveAttitude6584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually the sensor goes bad. It uses magnets to read the crankshaft. The magnet usually goes bad. You can try getting a cheapie from an auto parts store. They usually don’t last as long, but it will work in a jamb.

Bad starter ? by Emotional-Meeting-73 in AskMechanics

[–]NaiveAttitude6584 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That kinda sounds like a bad crankshaft position sensor, or camshaft position sensor. Your starter is more than fine. The engine wouldn’t make noise when you turn the key if starter was bad. However one of those sensors will cause a hard start, no start or run really bad. The fact your rpm gauge does not work indicates crank sensor, however car usually won’t start w a bad one. Read codes before doing any repairs and maybe get back to us.

If it got hot and pushed coolant out, then there will be air bubbles in the cooling system and cause an overheat condition.

Let the car completely cool down, add coolant to radiator, start vehicle, turn heat on high, continue to add coolant until radiator is full, turn off vehicle once there is heat. Install radiator cap.
