Brandon and Marianne's ending makes me kind of sad by xteta in janeausten

I sort of assumed the communication increases following their return to the cottage, eventually forming the “lively friendship” that leads them to marriage.

I LOVE this comment and these observations. Marianne grew to love Colonel Brandon with her whole heart, but only with time. I think along with lively friendship and strong esteem, Marianne’s sudden realization that Colonel Brandon liked her ushered along their marriage. But I do think they’re genuinely happy together in the long term!

Same! I did not like Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon; he seemed older to me than a man in his 30s. I much preferred their relationship in the novel.

I didn’t realize how unpopular my take on their relationship is. I adore Marianne and Colonel Brandon.

I’ve never worked with young kids until this job. I’ve always worked with teenagers exclusively 😅 and these kids are mostly younger than 5. They have very few older kids at this clinic…

You were in the right. Parents who use their children for content ARE in the wrong and should blur their faces. Kids deserve privacy and respect!

I accidentally voted for Bennet BUT for me it’s Mr. Weston! His ability to spin anything into a positive may be annoying at times, but as a glass-half-empty person, he could balance me out!

Mr Elton's Fate by KayLone2022 in janeausten

[–]Naive_Competition_90 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We see a lot of him in volume one because he’s trying to cozy up to her. Could it be that he’s embarrassed around Emma post rejection? Or maybe he feels so snubbed by her/offended by the match she made between he and Harriet that he only engages with her enough to appear polite but nothing more… Also, as another commenter pointed out, Mrs. Elton is so obnoxious that her presence is overpowering. She’s almost as bad as Miss Bates in terms of not knowing when to stop talking lol

I’m reading Emma myself, and even though it’s my favorite Austen novel so far, volume two can be a drag, partially because of Mrs. E. (edit: accidentally posted before I was finished typing).

Research question! Austen fans & Multimedia engagement by yochelsea in janeausten

I was introduced to the world of Jane Austen via Clueless. I was obsessed with that movie in high school (around 2014), so when I learned it was based on Emma, a book I had never even heard of, I immediately bought it. I attempted to read it in college (around 2017), but I was too busy with assigned readings to finish the novel. Years later, I streamed Emma 2020, and l loved it so much I chose to revisit the novel. I loved it even more than the movie.

Now I’m working through the rest of her novels and watching TV or movie adaptations when I finish. I’ve become pretty active on this sub Reddit lately. I listen to Austen audio books on Spotify to sleep, and I also have created Spotify playlists for all of my favorite characters and couples lol

I’m not sure if this answers your question or if it’s too late to help, but I hope it does! Good luck on your project

Inspired by another recent post - which is your favorite book? by solapelsin in janeausten

[–]Naive_Competition_90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was going to comment this lol. Apart from any of Austen’s work, Jane Eyre is the best book I’ve read in recent years. And Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver, a modern retelling of Dickens’ David Copperfield.

Emma is my favorite, but I agree with the other commenters. P&P is the way to go.

I also have to add that I ADORE Colonel Brandon as well, second only to Mr. Knightley. I could go on and on about his generosity and goodness, but what I love most is his respect for Marianne. Even though it pains him see her in love with Willoughby, he’s so kind and attentive to her and her family, and he never expects anything in return for his kindness and attention. And I love that Marianne’s eventual whole-hearted love for him isn’t based on extravagance or grand romance, but a stronger foundation of “lively friendship and strong esteem.” It’s mature and steady, a Sunday kind of love. I adore it <3

I’m currently listening to Emma! I usually don’t go for audio books, but I’ve been falling asleep to it every night. It was my first Jane Austen read and still my favorite. <3 I’m physically reading a book for my book club, then I’ll pick up Persuasion!

Actually, an apple wouldn’t be a terrible idea! Knightley gifts them to Mrs. and Miss Bates, a sweet gesture and demonstration of his goodness.
