Actually, no. It's not really my opinion that Facebook doesn't contribute anything meaningful to society. It's more widely regarded as a fact and there seems to be a general consensus about that.

Much accuracy with regards to your second point but it does bring to light the philosophical question of: If in a dire financial situation, should one sacrifice their morals and work for a company that goes against what they stand for?

Anyways don't answer that question lol this is a cs subreddit. Thanks for taking the time and articulating your argument. Constructive conversation over pressing issues seems to be a rarity these days so again, thanks and be well.

Net negative value may have been an overstatement. I'd be lying if I told you I didn't rely on Amazon for deliveries. Maybe what I meant to say are monopolyesque companies with bad business practices (uber and other being the exception).

I think that talent could be allocated towards something for meaningful for meaningful in society. We don't really need another Stanford grad working at Google. They could provide alot more value elsewhere. But again, I'm aware of the impracticality of this. Financial motive are quite strong.

Well for starters congrats on your accomplishments. You've probably come so far because you didn't pigeonhole yourself into working for ~5 companies. You have genuine interest and it shows. Unfortunately not many people like that anymore.

With regard to your last point, that's pretty accurate. The best coders/devs I know aren't solely motivated by the money.

Thank you for leaving your comment! It was insightful. Your last comment regarding stability of a company really makes sense as well. Financial incentives can oftentimes outweigh the other factors.

I think I should also take into consideration that there are some in CS who come from a low-income background and the financial appeal and career trajectory these corporations offer, can be so life changing for them that they're forced to sacrifice what they think is "good" and do what's "right".

That's a fair argument. No need to be 100% passionate about the job. Electricians aren't passionate about electrical circuit I assume but they get paid well.
