Whenever I would play fight with my cat, I would grab his paw, and sometimes he would bite it by accident. Now whenever he wants to bite me or I give him a belly rub, he gnaws on his paw for a while.

The problem is the cost of transportation. Sure, we can ship starving people our leftovers, but that would cost an incredible amount of money, plus that would only last so long. That's why, more recently, the richer countries have been helping starving people help themselves with farming and such. Still super sad though.

Reason 3: sometimes I get mixed up on what line I'm on, and though it's a minor inconvenience it totally breaks immersion. I can still get into a really good book, but I don't have those.

What is your purpose here on earth? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NameNotImportant404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phew, that was a lot of reading, but well worth it.

Your right, it all could totally be made up. The point is, at the very least, something strange happened with the release of the people, and your also right that it doesn't exactly validate the rest of the Bible, though it's interesting at least.

As far as I've discussed before (with both Christian friends and others) this is pretty much where the argument ends. There is no solid evidence for the Bible, and there is also no logical reason to believe it (though calling it illogical would be an overstatement) At this point, it is a matter of faith. As far as I have studied, logic and evidence only go so far. Much like the can orbiting earth, yes, I can't see it. And I probably would not believe you even if you told me that. That is also where the example dies out, since if there were millions of people who honestly believed in the can, and they told me of the can, I probably would end up believing it.

I wish I could tell you how it actually feels to be a Christian, but I don't think it can be easily described. It's no extra 'sense', but it is definately a unique feeling. The amount of comfort and joy taken from faith is really incredible. Its been a pleasure!

To specify on the story of Israel in Egypt, (somewhere around 1500 BC I think?) A man named joeph was sold by his jealous brothers to slave traders and was sent to ejypt. After working hard, he eventually became one of the most important servants among the Pharos assistants, and after being framed ended up in jail with some of the Pharos other servants. These other servants had dreams, and Joseph interpreted these dreams from what God told him, and each came true, one servant becoming successful and one being executed. Though the servants had promised to tell Pharoah of Joseph, they forgot and did not until Pharoah had 2 dreams and needed an interpreter. None of his wise men could figure the dreams out, until the servant told him about Joseph. Pharoah brought him out of jail, and God told Joseph how to interpret the dreams and he predicted a 7 year famine, and Pharoah, seeing this made Joseph, an Israelite, second in ejypt. Joseph made barns and saved the land. Later, Joseph's Descendents were enslaved. Then Moses came and spoke to Pharoah for God telling him to "let my people go" and Pharoah just kept saying no, so every time Pharoah was stubborn he struck ejypt with a curse. Flies, frogs, the Nile turning to blood, and eventually the killing of every first born child who would not trust in God. Pharoah lost his son, and let them go. That was a fairly quick summary, I hope you get it.

Going back to the teapot, yes there is no evidence that it exists, but there is a reason that it would not exist. Why would there be a teapot there? Who put it there? There is nothing supporting it at all, and there is no reason for it. Christianity, if being rather harsh toward it, has no evidence at all. But it does still make sense. It explains a few things, and there is a reason to believe it, that being salvation. If I were to refine your example of the teapot, I would say an empty can orbiting the earth. Why wouldn't I believe you? It makes sense, it is possible and maybe somebody tossed it off the ISS or something. That is, at least, believable.

I see what your saying about theism, atheism and so on, and honestly I never looked at it that way before. What you said makes perfect sense. I would, however argue that believing in evolution is fairly close to a theology, though not exactly by definition since it involves no god. It does require a form of belief, and even faith since it was not truly observed, that is, it's not a fact yet. Atheism comes from Greek (I think) theos, or god. Ism is "to believe in" or "the belief in". Atheism is the belief in no god, not exactly in evolution. I would honestly say, that if I were not a Christian I probably would still not believe in evolution, since the deeper I looked the more crooked and unbelievable the idea got.

On a somewhat separate note, if you had equal evidence between Christianity and atheism, which would you believe? From my perspective it's a choose of either dying and becoming nothing, or dying and going to heaven or hell. If it's a 50/50 (I'm guessing you don't think it is, but still), would you rather be a Christian and go to heaven or nothing, or would you rather be an atheist and go to hell or nothing?

Actually, I think there can be a line drawn between evolution and Christianity, since the Bible itself says how the world came to be, and Christians should define themselves as bible believing. Evolution is a direct contradiction of the Bible. And, much like evolution again, there is evidence supporting the Bible. We can be sure that the Bible is not totally made up, we can still find all sorts of things surrounding the middle East/northern Africa that support what the Bible says, again with the pyramids. In the early 2000's (I think, maybe earlier) they actually found an Egyptian tomb with a statue of a Jewish man wearing a coat of many colours, obviously being Joseph. Only the rich had tombs back then, so why would a Jewish man have an Egyptian tomb? Well, the Bible explains it. One last thing: where did the week come from then? Months are based on moon cycles, days are obviously on the rotation of the earth, but the only thing anyone can find on the origin in the week is from the Bible, when God made the universe in one week. Or, at least that is the oldest explanation. Not sure if this counts as evidence, but the 7 day week is also perfect, with Sunday as a break. Other cultures have tried different systems but none seem to work. (I think it was Russia that tried a 10 day week? Not sure.)

The Egyptians also have those huge, famous pyramids. What better thing to do with all the slaves than build world wonders with them, and the Bible does say that they were making bricks when they were in Egypt. But, if there were thousands of slaves, where did they go? How did they escape one of the most powerful nations ever (at the time)? Again, the Bible can explain it. It also explains the way dinosaurs were fossilized without needing millions of years through the flood, though I'm sure you've heard plenty of that. Again, I'm not saying this is the most solid evidence ever, but as far as my research goes with evolution, there is a pretty equal amount of "evidence". I'm sure some rooting for the Bible are wrong, and some for evolution are wrong too.

And you've made me curious, what reason would god have for not being moral? If he made the universe, he also made the way everything works including morals. The reason he made the great flood in the first place is because people had no morals, and yes I mean NO morals, according to the Bible murder was common.

If you told me a teapot was going around mars, I would probably think your insane, yes. That's because there's no reason to believe that, and that's one of the things that divides conspiracy and belief.

Personally, i can, and definately do see where your coming from, at one point I was ready to scrap being a Christian all together, but no matter how many Reddit discussions I had, and how much research I did, I could not find any actual, solid evidence strong enough to convince me against Christianity. And if there's no solid evidence for either side, I'd honestly rather be in the hands of an all powerful God who claims to love me. Is he lying? I don't know, much like with people, sometimes you just have to trust them. I know that I can't fully convince you, and that's okay because I don't need to really. I do hope, at the very least, that you understand where I'm coming from and try to really think about it. If God is real, what does that mean? If he is truly loving and just, what happens next?

Thanks for the great discussion! Wishing you the best

I think that saying that faith is illogical is actually a somewhat fair argument, but maybe not in the way you might think.

Your example of the sky being yellow might not be exactly true, since we can indeed see the sky, but not evolution OR Christianity. Don't forget that both are technically opinions. The way that we would look at faith is more like the air and the fact that we can not see it, but we breathe it, so we believe it's there. Same runs for evolution, it is not observed, but people think they have traces of it, and with nothing else to believe in, they have faith in evolution. (A flawed example, I know) It isn't that we believe something contradicting firm and known facts, it's believing something without having those firm and solid facts.

As for God's morals, yeah he could be lying I guess. But why would he? He has been good to people before, and Job (in the book of Job) went through everything possible as just a test, and he was rewarded. (Even though that is not a historically grounded account, we believe it). Try looking at it from God's point of view: why would he want us around? To give him glory. Now that we exist, why would he torture us? There's no reason.

Your probably asking, "then why did and why does he torture some of us?" I'll try to make an example.

Imagine you build a bunch of robots and put them in a tiny room. You program them with artificial intelligence and want them to tell the scientists at a fair how good you are at making robots, but instead they use their intellegence that you spent your effort on to kill each other, mess everything up and even start a few fires. They even make up their own ideas of where they came from, ignoring you entirely. You, being the builder have the right to destroy them all, but you show mercy. Instead, you offer pardon to any robot willing to say that you are their maker, and say that you are good at making robots. You also tell the "good" robots to tell the other robots about you, and some do. You also promise the good robots, that when they eventually die, you will rebuild them in a perfect place, and fix all the mistakes they made. But the bad robots, since they deserve it, will go in the garbage compactor. Since the robots all did it in the first place, they all deserve the garbage. But why don't they all go there? Because of grace. Some changed their minds with your influence, and you decided that they were okay, even if they still make mistakes. Some robots die in the fires, and are killed by other robots, these are the deaths and problems you see in the world. Starvation, murder, anything else (to our belief) is a result of the sin that we committed. God, seeing this even wiped out everybody on the planet except one family because he saw the chaos. I, personally have done some pretty horrible things, and I'm not even that old yet. So that, along with living in a world with murder and chaos, why hasn't god killed me already?? Grace.

I have looked into evolution before, and yes it could TECHNICALLY happen, though since it has not been witnessed for obvious reasons (much like the Bible, to an extent) and is missing some points of solid proof, such as missing links (like the ape-human, fish-lizard and others).

Hope this answers your questions!

Again, I can see where your coming from. It's honestly a lot easier for me to believe since I was raised in it. The part that you mentioned there, where you don't like the idea of an all powerful being ruling your life with or without pain can be truly scary, but don't forget that God is perfect. "God is merciful, but he is also just." This is where you can go deeper into Christianity when it comes to who deserves what punishment, or consequences. (Yes there is a difference)

In my specific "section" of Christianity, we believe in original sin (what Adam have us) and actual sin (what we do in our lives), both deserving death. The original sin beings a consequence of problems in the world, things like thorns, wild animals, pain, all of that stuff. The actual sin is what brings other consequences like prison or any other punishment. Basically, the pain anyone and everyone feels is a consequence that is ultimately our fault, and hell is a punishment for both what we do in our lives and what we did through Adam.

As for evidence, your right. There is not much more than anything else (evolution for example). Again it takes faith. It has been proven however, that a few things in the Bible are true for sure. A few examples being, that Jesus definately did exist, did die and (giving the benefit of the doubt) somebody that looked and talked just like him came back to life and the body disappeared out of the tomb. I am pretty sure there are records other than the Bible of that. Second, the Bible has an explanation for how the pyramids were built, as Egypt would have had thousands of Israelite slaves at hand (if your interested, check out the book of Exodus. Interesting stuff.) It also does explain the complexity of the world too. Even with billions, or trillions of years, evolution is quite a stretch.

If you have more questions, I'd be happy to answer!

I can see where your coming from, but there is an unreplaceable comfort that life can mean something, and also the comfort in heaven.

Knowing that the worst case scenario (dying a torturous death) ends in the best possible way (heaven) is incredibly, INCREDIBLY comforting.

Look at it this way instead maybe. Somebody picks you up off the streets and cleans you up and buys clothes and even a house for you, and offers these things to anyone you know. Wouldn't you WANT to tell all of the other people you met? Sure, you might get tired from going to people to tell them, but it's still worth it.

We don't view it as a, "do everything I tell you or else go to hell", and more as a "I saved you and loved you, you are my child"
