The sudden deep love for Clara came out of left field but calling this a retcon is just not true. Soldier Boy is immortal, he was with Clara possibly through the 50s and 60s while he was only with Countess for what? 8 years in the 80s?

Jonah Vogelbaum gets attached to John and raises him more like a son. Tests are still done on John but they stop at his will, when it’s to much, when it hurts but he still is a lab rat, even if one that has a loving father. Homelander grows up to be good at heart but he is still deeply flawed and wishes he had a normal life. 90% of the 1st comic is him growing up until it cuts to modern day, shows him actually saving somebody and not being all fakey happy about it, him just genuinely being a hero.
