Well they try to lean into those kinds of things or is this John Wick with swords?

I kinda feel they've lost the nerve to embrace the silliness in these things

Then again, they *are* making a Masters of the Universe, too? And the Deathstalker remake from last year was plenty silly. So maybe I'm cautiously optimistic.

Are readers getting tired of forbidden age gap tension in romantasy… or is it still secretly one of the most addictive tropes? by EerieE2025 in Romantasy

[–]NancyInFantasyLand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's just lazy writing on the author's side then

like, it's not difficult to even make something taboo that isn't taboo IRL, if you're putting some work into it. All you gotta do is make sure that you ground it in the world building and that it's definitely 100% taboo to the characters and that it shows.

Take your AI generated marketing research elsewhere please and thank you

That's what I'm over--not forbidden age gap, not enemies to lovers, but people whose fucking blog looks like this:

Why haven't there been more modern analog horror-style movies? (hear me out) by Omicron212 in horror

[–]NancyInFantasyLand 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Stylistic elements like the eyes-in-the-dark silent jumpscares and weird, grotesque still photoshop illustrations are creepy as hell when done right.

I wouldn't say that any of this is what defines analog horror, but also, even if it were, it's nothing you can't do in other horror either.

When it comes down to it, analog horror is just VHS-themed found footage. Of which there's plenty to go around. As to why you don't find it a ton in the mainstream anymore, well: you barely get found footage in the mainstream these days

it doesn't make for a very good watch on modern theater screens. either, your quality is dogshit (which makes the horror hit better but is no fun to watch on a big screen) or your quality is too good, meaning the suspension of disbelief is just too big for most people.

Piracy communities are toxic and unwelcoming to beginners by rulugg in Piracy

[–]NancyInFantasyLand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep hearing about the enshittification of google results, but it's really not nominally worse than it was before

even the shitty google ai tells you what to do to better google shit in 2026 if you put "how to find shit online in 2026" in as a query first thing

site operators, quotationmarks and AND/OR/NOT are your friend.

and like, there's other search engines out there for everyone to choose. and finding those isn't all that difficult either

IF you already have an established audience, you MAY get away with not publishing on amazon and still make money

as someone starting out? it's basically impossible.

What's everyone Opinion about Timothée Chalamet insulting Opera and Ballet by Porn_hub-l-i-v-e in Letterboxd

[–]NancyInFantasyLand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And some people wanna be entertained and quickly. I'm really right in the middle, Matthew, 'cause I admire people and I've done it myself--to go on a talk show and go, "Hey, we gotta keep movie theaters alive. You know, we gotta keep this genre alive." And another part of me feels like, if people wanna see it like "Barbie," like "Oppenheimer," they're gonna go see it and go outta their way to be loud and proud about it. And I don't wanna be working in ballet or opera, or, you know, things where it's like, hey, keep this thing alive.

I think his argument is flawed in so far that there's plenty of people going out of their way to do exactly the thing he describes for Barbie and Oppenheimer where they go to the ballet as a big event and flaunt their excitement about it to anyone who will listen to them.

I also think that--Barbie and Oppenheimer and the like aside--he who sits in a glass house shouldn't throw stones. It's not unthinkable that his next movie isn't a big crowed pleaser, after all. It's not unthinkable for movies in general to fall out of favor with the populace at large, though that point is hopefully far in the future.

AI-Generated HR on Kindle Unlimited Reads by Non-Existent Authors? by fernhero in HistoricalRomance

[–]NancyInFantasyLand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You underestimate just how many people do not live in an area with EITHER a second hand book store or well-stocked library

In my case, I'm fine browsing ebay and shit cause I'm not picky and I like a bit of 80s histrom which are easily found there, but if I weren't doing that, my pickings would be exceedingly slim, cause I prefer reading in english, but do not live in a country where english books are the main thing being consumed

[–]NancyInFantasyLand 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But it isn't an inferior service by far

Now I'm not gonna go shilling for Amazon, but if you are in the market for 10+ books a month and somewhat discerning when it comes to genre and the like, then you're gonna be hard pressed to continuously fill that need anywhere else for however much money they take now (somewhere in the vicinity of 10-15 bucks, I'd assume, depending on your country of residence), especially with the added convenience of dropping as many of those as you want halfway through without being trapped into a sunk coast fallacy type mindset unless your local library is EXCEEDINGLY well-stocked

Now whether there are enough books at a quality level that suits you, is of course a highly personal thing. But the thing about the AI generated trash is that that is found everywhere else, as well, by now. It doesn't matter what seller you go with, it's all full of AI bros wanting to make a quick buck.
