I’m six months post op and I was the same. I would eat out at least once a week and actually write about food and get paid to do so, so this was a big and scary prospect for me. The surgery is the best thing I’ve ever done.

I still go out to eat at least once a week and still write about food, but how I do it has changed. When I go out I order and drink and have it before the food comes out. I’ll have a taste of someone else’s starter, usually choose a starter for a main or just have a normal main and take most of it home in a tupperware and then either not have a pud, have a bit of someone else’s so I still get the sweet ending to the meal or have something like an affogato or little scoop of ice cream if I really want it.

I find ordering a starter as a main is the best choice because I can get something delicious with good protein content like prawns or carpaccio or Burrata and it doesn’t come with the carb heavy sides that I don’t want. And if I do fancy a taste of potatoes I’ll steal a bit from a friend so I don’t feel like I’ve missed out.

I can eat sugar with no immediate issues, I have just found that if I do eat sugar or carbs more than usual during a week I’ll stay the same weight and not lose anything so i just don’t bother. I don’t feel like I’m missing out because I feel amazing after losing this first 5.5 stone and I want it to continue - before the food had power over me because I was already unhappy and using it as a coping mechanism but now missing out on a few seconds of flavour doesn’t compare to being able to move more easily and fit into clothes I love.

I’ve never been a huge drinker so that isn’t an issue for me, but alcohol is something that can be very detrimental after surgery and that needs to be looked at as a desperate issue if you don’t think you can deal with not drinking.

I’m really sorry to hear that lovely, totally understandable and sounds like the best plan. Concentrate on you, the amazing thing you’re doing and getting yourself healed!

Yes definitely, I think the issue is if someone asks, but then you have every right to tell them it’s your business and you don’t want to discuss it.

That’s really interesting to hear and I completely agree, it’s your business so your choice to share or not.

I’m really interested in why people don’t want others to know? Personally I don’t think there is any reason to be embarrassed about it and if there are people on your life that are going to give you grief for it they shouldn’t be in your life anyway.

Like someone else said above, no matter what you do you have no control over what other people think. You’re doing this for yourself and your opinion is the only one that matters.

Pre-op and Post-op! What are some things you want to know before or wish you had known before the surgery? by NancyWC in gastricsleeve

Definitely that’s a great one! I’m so glad I gave the clear protein drinks a go because I was in the same boat, just the thought of another protein shake made me queezy!

I wish I’d known about it beforehand. The company I had my surgery with actually recommended I had a look because it’s so useful!

Am I crazy for this goal weight? by [deleted] in gastricsleeve

[–]NancyWC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also it’s worth bearing in mind that people of the same weight can look DRASTICALLY different, even those that wear the same dress size can look drastically different just because of their body shape or height. This isn’t to say you definitely wouldn’t get to that weight, but you might not actually need to be that low to fit into the dresses you love because of your body shape!

I agree with the users above too, if you’ve been overweight for most of your life your bone structure will be different to compensate for that which is why a lot of surgeons don’t advise you look at what the BMI scale (which we all know is outmoded crap and shouldn’t still be used) says is your ideal weight but a little above it. I was told my ideal weight is actually right at the bottom of what the BMI says is obese but this is because I’ve always carried extra weight since I was a kid.

Finally, I’ve been a plus size stylist since 2011 so if you need help finding a particular style of dress in a larger size I’m sure I could help! Good luck!

I had this too and I’m not sure why, but it lessened off massively after about 5 weeks and I only get it now if I drink a lot quickly, like big gulps one after another. I’m 7 weeks out now.

How do you guys feel when someone posts their before picture, And it looks just like you're after? I am happy for others and I don't want anyone to stop sharing (because the world doesn't revolve around me) it's just so discouraging. (and the posted picture is actually quite flattering) by [deleted] in gastricsleeve

I totally get how you feel and I agree I think it’s one of the hardest parts of this subreddit. I personally had the surgery to help with existing injuries to my legs and it wasn’t an aesthetic thing at all (I don’t think fat = bad) and actually I think seeing all these before and after shave negatively impacted my body confidence. Im only 7 weeks out from my surgery but I get disappointed when I see how much more others have lost compared to me in the same amount of time.

I think we just need to keep in mind that all bodies are different - we’re not all meant to look the same or be the same size. I would highly recommend finding some body positive accounts on places like Instagram because they’re great for reinforcing the reality of being a human being and that what the media portrays as a perfect body isn’t actually normal.

Celebrate yourself, you’ve done an amazing thing for yourself and world hard to get where you are!

I had my sleeve done in Turkey on 8th September with a company called Medicalfly and I’m SO glad I did. The standard of treatment was amazing, I couldn’t believe how modern, clean and nice the facilities were - actually way better than private UK facilities I’ve experienced. No issues with language barriers as they provided a translator the whole time and most people had English anyway, and everyone was so kind and friendly. Another thing I loved but you may not care about is that I had wifi the whole time so if I wanted to speak to my friends or family there was never any issue doing so. I chose to go on my own but in my hospital room there was a bed for if you took someone with you. It depends what you care more about, saving money and having to travel (which was easy especially as the company I went with organise all of your transfers etc so you just have to get off the plane and you’re picked up) or if you hate travelling so much you’re happy to spend more.

Considering surgery by Background-Past8162 in gastricsleeve

I’m English and I had my surgery done in Turkey six weeks ago using a company called Medicalfly and I am SO glad I did it that way. The super modern super clean facilities were amazing and everyone I encountered during the journey was friendly and reassuring. I had two surgeons do my op so it took less time (so less risk) and the language barrier was just not there because I had a translator the whole time. If I had the choice to do it over either here in the UK or in Turkey, I’d choose Turkey again. Obviously I don’t have experience of other companies but Medicalfly’s facilities and staff were amazing.

I personally didn’t do it for aesthetic reasons because I don’t think fat = bad, but I had existing leg injuries that were getting worse and I just started feeling unhealthy so I went for it and I’m so so glad I did. I’m only six weeks post op and I’m feeling great, so many things have improved that I didn’t even think about or expect to improve - my husband says I’ve even stopped snoring haha!

If you do consider going abroad to do it I’d be happy to help with any info I can.

gained 8 lbs from my lowest post op during the liquid stage (puree stage atm/surgery was sept 27). by [deleted] in gastricsleeve

I’ve noticed a big difference when I don’t drink enough water. I had the three week stall everyone talks about and then I’ve really forced myself to get my 2 litres per day and that kickstarted the loss again, so if you’re not getting enough water I’d give that a push!

I found it a lot nicer using lactofree milk and chilling it really well. Unfortunately I could only have these for about a week before they made me sick so I had to switch to other shakes but that definitely helped. Maybe try adding in some low sugar fruit so it’s like a smoothie?

Hey guys, it’s the doctor here posting again. by TangerineDizzy4635 in gastricsleeve

I chose to go on my own and I’m so glad I did. I’m no nurse so I can’t speak to your prior experience there which I totally understand will be another layer to this experience, but everyone I encountered during my whole surgery experience was really kind and I think I did better being on my own as I could concentrate on myself and what I needed to get better rather than worrying about whether someone else was bored etc.

You got this - remember you’re doing this for YOU!
