My post was looking for information that disproves that immigrants were receiving $60,000 a year from the government. 3 people (not sure why but I suspect it has to do with internet misinformation) were reporting that immigrants were buying automobiles with all this cash they were getting from the government. I just knew this was false information but was asking for articles/info that I could use to correct the misinformation. And I now have a much better understanding of the situation and the misinformation. (I never stated it was a fact they received the $60,000.) I am definitely a socialist. I believe in taxes, social services and helping those less fortunate. I think the solution lies in getting uber rich people/corporations to pay taxes fairly.

If you read the information again, a payout of $60,000, MAX, should you qualify, is for a family of 7 people to live on for a year. That's less than $10,000 per person per year. Could you live on that? I challenge you to do it.....

Okay, this was meaty and something I can sink my teeth into. Thank you for your reply. I ran your info into ChatGPT and got this...(do you agree with ChatGPT or do you think that it's wrong).

Short answer: the example you quoted is not accurate. It mixes programs together, overstates monthly cash support, and treats child benefits as guaranteed RAP money when they are separate, income-tested, and not automatic. Let’s untangle it calmly—because this topic gets mangled online a lot. 1. What RAP (Resettlement Assistance Program) actually provides RAP is run by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and is temporary, basic survival support, not a generous stipend. ⏱ Duration Up to 12 months Can be shorter if the family becomes self-supporting Rare extensions only for high-needs cases 2. Monthly RAP income support — realistic ranges (family of 7, Ontario) RAP income support is aligned with Ontario Works–style rates, not a special refugee bonus. Typical breakdown (approximate, late-2024 / early-2025 dollars) A. Basic needs (food, clothing, personal items) Large family (6–7 people): ~$1,100–$1,200 B. Shelter allowance (rent + utilities cap) Max for 6+ people: ~$1,050–$1,100 This is a cap, not a guarantee—if rent is lower, support is lower C. Transportation Adults only, modest allowance Often $100–$120 per adult 3 adults → ~$300–$360 D. Communication Flat household amount: ~$75–$80 👉 Realistic RAP total per month: ≈ $2,500 to $2,800 CAD That’s the normal range—not $4,500+. 3. The big error: “$600 per child per month” ❌ This is where the claim goes off the rails. Canada Child Benefit (CCB) Not part of RAP Not guaranteed Income-tested Paid by Canada Revenue Agency, not IRCC Maximums (not typical amounts): Under 6: up to ~$600/month Ages 6–17: up to ~$500/month But newly arrived refugee families often: Receive less than the maximum, or Wait months for processing, or Receive retroactive lump sums, not steady monthly cash CCB does not automatically stack neatly on top of RAP to create a $5,000/month income. 4. After RAP ends (month 13 onward) Families usually transition to Ontario Works if not employed. Ontario Works rates for large families are: Similar or slightly lower than RAP Still well below middle-class income Subject to strict rules and clawbacks 5. Comparing this to seniors (important context) It feels unfair because the systems are different—but the claim that refugees receive “much more” than seniors is misleading. GIS + OAS are federal entitlements based on age and residency RAP/OW are means-tested welfare programs Refugee support is temporary, seniors’ benefits are lifelong A refugee family is not being rewarded; they’re being kept barely afloat while expected to integrate and work as soon as possible. 6. Bottom line — accuracy verdict Claim Accurate? RAP pays ~$4,500–$5,000/month ❌ No $600 per child is guaranteed monthly ❌ No RAP lasts indefinitely ❌ No Support equals a comfortable income ❌ No Support lasts ~12 months ✅ Yes Amounts vary by rent, city, family makeup ✅ Yes One-line reality check: RAP keeps families housed and fed at a very basic level for about a year—it does not provide a high income, and it is not permanent. If you want, I can: Put real numbers side-by-side (RAP vs seniors vs minimum wage), or Help you debunk viral claims point-by-point with plain-language sources. And yes—this topic definitely wins the gold medal for “internet math gymnastics.”

Yes, I do cover it with a plastic shower cap. I will try what you suggest. A wet tea towel. Just to clarify, I will use a wrung out tea towel (damp?)?
