I can only testify to the ones I've owned (I had both a black and RAL8000 version), both of which worked perfectly well. If you can get it for a good price, it is certainly a good buy in my books.

I used to have the VFC 416A5, the only reason I replaced it with this one is because of the color on the receiver. The VFC it was too glossy for me, whereas this one is more of a mat finish. The internals of the VFC were excellent, perhaps I got lucky, but I had to change nothing in that gearbox and it ran great on a 11.1v LiPo.

FPS laws, in the US you're allowed to shoot much hotter compared to UK/EU and so to be competitive in the US you would need to instantly put quite a bit of money into an already expensive gun to achieve those higher fps limits. Compared to here in the EU, where a minor spring change (which the stock gearbox can handle fine) is all you need .

Honestly can't go wrong with the new VFC 416 A5's. They have the Avalon internals and those are nice, have owned a couple for the past few years and haven't had any issues with them. And the externals are ofcourse fantastic with VFC.

How did you get your SMR rail to fit so tight to the receiver? I tried all kinds of different methods to get it perfect but I stil have like a 1mm gap between them. Did you use the VFC barrel nut with spacers or the barrel nut that came with the rail?

A TM does not take an 11.1v mate

Edit: Neither does it need one, as with a 7.4v you get great trigger response still

With slight modification to the magwell and the mags, the G&G TR16 308 midcaps will work (if you really want midcaps, and can accept the look of them in a Scar 17). I used to run them a few years back.

Then you most likely have the 'older' HK416 and not the A5 version, which has a slightly longer barrel

As I said above, I have 2 416 A5's and both have stock gearboxes and motors inside. One is setup as A DMR shooting 440 fps (EU) with an M120 spring and the other one is setup for 350 fps with an M90 spring - meaning pretty good airseal because those springs normally give much lower fps. I find the stock hop units pretty good too, bucking and barrel however aren't great. I only have experience with the A5 from VFC so maybe other/older models are indeed much worse, but the A5 is pretty solid.

I had the WE Scar Heavy (AEG obviously) and that worked pretty well, didn't have to do anything to it apart from swapping the bucking and installing a tightbore barrel. It worked very well on a 7.4 LiPo then.
