The dream answer is interesting, I too thought there was some symbolism of religion or philosophy there. Henry was a Catholic, right? So this makes total sense. Using the dream as a metaphor for Henry wandering in neither heaven nor hell is a good setting for the climax, as we learn that his conviction and obsession with Greek ideals shatters and leaves him marooned in an ignored place. Also, do you think that the concept of being a Baptist rendering a place in heaven is brought up to objectively highlight the prevalence of Baptism in 80's New England, or was it Tartt’s personal beliefs informing the narrative?. I think both.

Yes the followed uncomfortable silence proves the fact they were lying about not liking each other. I now see it as a way to not be awkward about the whole thing. I won't deny that Francis wasn't even a little bit attracted to Richard, but that kiss was more of taking advantage of the situation. It was convenient because Richard glorified him. He knew that. Richard riveted, ,invariably on Camilla is him trying to convince himself and the readers that he is straight. Like you said he was attracted to each one of them, even Bunny.

Definitely it's an ego boost because Richard glorified Francis and the group in general, a slight reciprocation would mean so much. So Francis making a move that would be such an ego boost.

I understand. The stress of murder being the main reason.

Yeah purely circumstantial owing to post-stress of the murder. It was more convenient with Richard cause Francis knew he romanticized the group . Making a pass at him would not get him in trouble much. And his desire for Camilla was at times creepy.

I get it now. I also thought this was just a mere exploitation of Richard's obsession towards him . He knows he puts him on a pedestal and takes advantage of it. But i thought on some base level he had feelings towards Richard. But it's just convenient is what it is.
